Question about Apple Ipod Nano Second Gen. Green (4 GB) MA487LLA MP3 Player

1 Answer

Not able to download mp4 music files into my Ipod anymore

I was able to download music in mp4 format to my Nano Ipod saving space that way. I synchronized the Ipod to a full Itunes bibl. by mistake. Since then I cannot download mp4 audio files into my Ipod. I did a Restart and all music, old mp4 included, disappeared. Now only mp3 music can be downloaded. Is there a way to restore Ipod ability to handle music mp4 files? Thanks for help

    Hi

I have a Classic too. My Itunes is the latest version and I can play the mp4 files in the Itunes... but the Nano refuse to receive them... this was not so at the beginning, thanls for your help

  • ipod fan Dec 29, 2007

When I did a restart I tried to put back the same files that were there and to my surprise did not work. I have also tried with new ones. The musci is all my discothec being transfered with help of Nero. I thought that when the Ipod became overloaded, something in the software stopped accepting mp4 but it would be OK if I restarted. No.

I talked to a guy in a store that sells Ipods. He thinks it has to do with the software. The new nanos and the new Classics have a software supporting mp4 but he was unsure about the second generation. i told him I could at the beginning. He recommended to go to the internet for solutions... thanks

  • ipod fan Dec 29, 2007

Yes, thats the one with the problem, the Nano Ipod, second generation. I have a Classic 80 Gb and a 160 Gb... and no problem with them (big family, many Ipods). Thanks for any openings.

  • ipod fan Dec 29, 2007

If you mean by that the reinstall button on the right side, the one that reset the Ipod and take away whatever is on it... is what I did. If you mean something else... no... and I would like to know how to do it

  • ipod fan Dec 29, 2007

    Hi

I am almost sure that when I downloaded the latest itune the Nano was updated too, but I am not sure. There is a message always as soon as you conect the Ipod, saying that you dont need to update... some times the message has been to update and I did just that... The Nano is with my daughter now and she will be back on monday. If you think I should do that I will and report back to you... Unfortunately I think it is updated... by your questions I infer that I should be able to download mp4... I ll keep in touch, thanks

  • ipod fan Dec 30, 2007

    Hi

I did that. I cleaned the Itunes and put a selection of songs in mp4 there and selected the synchronize mode. It did a couple of rounds, you know, the symbol in circles, and nothing more. I don t understand because, as you mentioned, I put them in the Itunes and can drag them to the other Ipods but not to this Nano. A week ago a friend bought a Nano third generation and I put some mp4 songs there, just to test... no problem

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

I think the Itunes was older... it uppdates all the time. I am now listening to mp4 in the Itunes... no problems... The Ipods I have are the Classics 80 and 160 mb... The 80 mb I bought it together with the Nano second generation in Wash DC July 2007. I have the Ipod now with me

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

I tried to find a newer versions for the Ipod but It answers I have the latest

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

    Hi

Yes I did the normal reset first and then I learned from Apple support the reset you describe.. I let the ipod synchronize automatically with the Itunes... the Itunes was empty but for an CD in mp4 format. The sign do not siconnect due to synchronization was on a moment and then it was OK to disconnect... but nothing came into the Ipod

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

I dont have access to a coding device here... you mean that nano second generation dont accept mp4 (MPEG-4 AAC file, Sample rate: 44100 Hz, Channels: 2, Average Bit Rate: 84650 bps)

I dont get it because it did before

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

Thanks, I changed the extension but it did not catch. You mean AAC as in Itunes files? AAC will take as little place as mp4?... here ends my knowledge of these things. thank for advice

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

the Nero program I use create HE AAC files. These are the files the Ipod do not accept. I think you are right in that the Ipod is not accepting my mp4 files due to software change

  • ipod fan Dec 31, 2007

    thanks

I suppose there is nothing else to do than to use it withh iyunes aac or mp3. thanks

  • ipod fan Jan 01, 2008

happy new year to you too... and a great thing!!! You were right and today I could make my daughter happy. It must be so that Ipod updated its programs to allow third generation Nanos to recognize mp4 as film files and by doing that, second generation nanos do not accept mp4 music files... but renaming the extension to m4a did it... it is working as it shoud... keep this in mind as you might get others asking you the same question... thanks a lot... Terrific help!!!!

Hi,

What happens when you try to transfer MP4's to your ipod? Are the MP4's recognized in itunes? If so, can it play them?

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Dec 29, 2007

Here are the instructions from Apple
    Reinstall

    • To update and reinstall your iPod software, first download the latest version of iTunes.
    • Next, open the new version of iTunes and connect your iPod to your computer.
    • Select your iPod in the source list and click "Check for Update" under the Summary tab. iTunes will check to see if your iPod needs to be updated and perform the update for you.

You can load anything that the itunes can see and play to the iPod. You mentioned that you tried to drag manually. What happens when you try to sync automatically?

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Dec 31, 2007

Say, when you were able to transfer mp4s, was the itunes an older version? You said that you managed to transfer mp4 files to other ipods, is it the exact same model as yours?

  • Damen Wong

Did you reset in these ways?

    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

What extension are your MP4 files?

If they are mp4 then try changing to m4a.

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Dec 31, 2007

You don't need to recode. Just change the extension of the mp4 audio file. For example from test.mp4 to test.m4a

The fact that it did it before and now no probably means Apple changed something (specifically here, the handling of mp4 files ) in the itunes or the nano firmware. By default the units see mp4 as video files and m4a as mp4 audio files (that is why I suggested trying to change the extension).

If all fails, may I suggest you encode your files with AAC. It is basically the same as mp4 audio files (mp4 is a container with AAC audio).

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Dec 31, 2007

Yes AAC is basically the same (like I said, mp4 uses AAC to encode the audio). You can create AAC files from itunes. If using another encoding program create iPod AAC audio files.

  • Damen Wong
    Damen Wong Dec 31, 2007

I wish I could give you a more definite answer but Apple simply don't provide full change logs for any of their software and firmware update. This change (with the mp4) could be intentional (for whatever reason they thought up of) or this could simply be a bug.

How to Copy DVDs (Video, background music) to iPod Nano, iPod shuffle

After Jobs unveiled the new iPod nano 5g at "Let's rock" this year, it was quite a big hit in 2009. The iPod nano has gone through five models, or generations, since its introduction. Adding files from IPod Nano GB to work computer

IPod isn't compatible with Windows Media player. You have to use ITunes to manage your music files. Ipods use mp3, mp4, a protected form of mp4 unique to apple, and aac format. aac format isn't recognized by windows media player.

Loading videos to ipod nano 3rd generation

iPod Nano accepts only MP4 format video, please make sure your video is compatible with iPod Nano. If your vide is MP4 video, please follow these steps:
1. Open iTunes and click "File" to add your videos to iTunes library.
2. plug in your iPod Nano to computer, then iTunes will detect your iPod Nano as a device.
3. Select your iPod Nano device on the left panel of iTunes, click "Movies" tab, check the videos you want to sync and click "Apply", done.

If your video isn't MP4 format, you need third party software to convert video to MP4. You may try an iPod converter developed by Aimersoft; it can convert videos to iPod Video and iPod Nano, iPod Touch and iPod Classic with fast conversion speed and excellenrt output quality, that's really good for me, you can have a try, here is its official download link

you can only get some videos whose format is compatible with your iPod nano, as i know, mp4, mov, are supported by iPod nano, while wmv can not be played on iPod nano. so you'd better convert your video format before you view them on your iPod nano.
here, such program such as any video convert, handbrake, etc. are free but they may have limits or bring some virus. you can try the video converter ultimate, it can help you to convert format easily and effortelessly.

Maybe your videos aren't in the correct format. Try converting them to .mov (which is the format of quicktime). You can use "Total Video Converter" or any other video converter. Save your videos and then take them to iTunes. Connect your Ipod and check the "sincronize videos" option. breNda!
