Hello... my Xerox 8500 displays a message saying "Close front cover to continue" The cover IS closed. Seems like it might be a relay switch? Is there anyway to reset? I've tried turning it off and back on again... Any help is appreciated !

Re: Close front cover message
Well here is what I can tell you.
Open the front cover. Staring you right in the face should be a bar code/number sticker. Look forward from that and there shoule be a small plastic tab, about a half inch long and less then the thickness of a popsicle stick. It is the front cover interlock switch actuator. It may be broken off.
Or look for the opening where that tab should slide into the machine the switch may be dislogded or broken.
Probably that tab has broken off not actuating the switch on that cover.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Solution : Replace the Drum / Toner (Dry Ink) Cartridge
CAUTION: Do not use warm water or cleaning solvents to remove Toner (Dry Ink) from your skin or clothing. This will set the Toner and make it difficult to remove. If any Toner gets on your skin or clothing, use a brush to remove the Toner, blow it off, or wash it off with cold water and mild soap. If not, launder your clothes with detergent and cold water. If the fabric label says to dry clean, inform a commercial dry cleaner that the spot is Toner so that they will not use a solvent that will set the stain.
NOTE: Make sure the Cartridge part number corresponds to the machine model. If an incorrect Cartridge is installed the message 'Check Drum / Toner (Dry Ink) Cartridge Message' will continue to appear on the machine display.
While lifting the upper, right-hand cover release lever of the machine, pull the upper right hand cover towards the right until it stops.
Open the Front Cover on the machine.
Grasp the Cartridge by the handle on the front, and slide it toward you until the top handle is completely clear of the machine.
Lift up on the top handle and slide the cartridge out of the machine.
CAUTION: Do not shake the cartridge and this could cause the Toner to spill.
Before you remove the new cartridge from the bag, shake it vigorously from side to side several times to loosen the contents.
Holding the new cartridge by the top handle, begin sliding it into the machine as indicated in the picture above. Do not push on the handle on the front of the cartridge as the cartridge will jam.
Hold the cartridge in place and pull the Toner seal tape until the cartridge is completely in place.
Close the Front Cover.
Close the upper right-hand cover.
If necessary, press [C] on the Control Panel to clear any messages. The system will initiate a Copy Quality adjustment cycle after you press the [Start] button.
The onlty thing I can find close to this is.
Acording to the manual its a ink loader error like your loading the wrong type of ink like the puzzles pieces arent matching and hitting the sensor flags right. Yours by the 8 is referring to the black ink. Anyway go to troubleshooting on the control panel. then to service tools. when in service tools press and hold the up arrow while still pressing the up arrow press the down arrow. the display should say hidden menus. go to diagnostic mode press enter go to funtion menu. then go to clear ISC fault and enter. ISC=ink stick count fault. I hope that helps. Just to let you know Ive had nothing but problems with third party ink and once its in the system its hard to get out so I would watch what im doing with my expensive equipment
Press the on-line / off-line key on the printer operator panel to set the printer off-line.
Use the upper softkeys to scroll to the 'Replace printhead' card
Press the softkey below the 'Replace printhead' card to enter the wizard. An introduction screen displays the message 'Use this wizard to replace printheads. A roll is needed for calibration.'

When calibration is not possible with the media available on the printer, the system asks you to load the correct media. When calibration is possible with one of the rolls, the system automatically uses the correct media roll. When calibration is possible with both rolls, use the lower softkeys to select the roll to use.
Press the key for 'Next'. The screen displays the message 'Carriage moving to centre position...' while the carriage moves to the centre. The screen displays 'Open top cover.'
Open the top cover. The screen displays the message 'Replace printheads' and the printheads that you must replace. Find the correct printhead number on the printhead carriage.
Press the front of the printhead cover to unlock the cover.
Open the printhead cover.
Pull out the printhead and remove it.
How to place a printhead
Remove the protective tape from the new printhead.
Do not touch the contact and nozzle areas of the printhead after you remove the protective tape.
Place the new printhead in the printhead holder. The printhead only fits in one way.
Close the printhead cover.
After you replaced the defective printhead, press the softkey for 'Next'
The screen displays the message 'Make sure that all head covers are properly positioned.' Press the key for 'Done'. The screen displays the message 'Close top cover.'
Close the top cover. The screen displays the message 'Carriage moving to home position...'
The screen displays 'Calibrating...'. The calibration process takes several minutes. You can stop the calibration process at any time. Press the key for 'Cancel' to stop the calibration process.
That usually means some sensor giving you trouble.
This is what brother recomends:
How do I clear the message Cover Open or Please Close Cover from the display?
The message Cover Open or Pls Close Cover may appear if the front cover for the drum was not closed securely. Verify the cover is closed securely by pressing the cover release button located in the front of the unit below the Output Tray Support Flap and open the front cover. Close the cover until it clicks into place.
If the message continues to appear on the display verify the drum and toner assembly is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:
1. Press the cover release button located in the front of the unit and open the front cover.
2. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge from the unit by lifting it up and out. Place it on a drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
3. Hold down the blue lock lever located on the right side of the drum and lift the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
4. Reinstall the toner cartridge into the drum unit by inserting it in the drum until it clicks into place
5. Reinstall the drum unit into the unit. Make sure it is securely in place.
6. Close the cover until it clicks into place
If that doesn't fix it, I guess you will have to talk to their support people.
Your Xerox has two cartridges - one is the drum cartridge and the other is a toner cartridge. Please check the following I've researched from your user guide:
Replacing the Drum Cartridge
The drum cartridge is a customer replaceable unit. After approximately 55,000 copies/
prints, the machine will display a warning message before the drum reaches the end of
life. Order a replacement cartridge now to insure continuous operation.
Country Part Number for the drum cartridge replacement All countries 13R589
Removing the Old Drum Cartridge 1. Pull the front cover towards you to open it. 2. Open Tray 5 (bypass tray) if necessary, and then open Cover A while lifting up
the release lever. 3. Lift up the colored lever, and slide the drum cartridge out until you can lift the
handle on top of the cartridge. 4. Hold the handle and remove the cartridge from the machine. NOTE: When replacing the drum cartridge, make sure that the new cartridge is the
correct one specified for the machine.
Recycling the Drum Cartridge
The drum cartridge is designed to be re-manufactured. To recycle used drum
cartridges, return them to Xerox in the original packaging. Return labels are included
with each new cartridge.
Inserting the New Drum Cartridge 1. Remove the new drum cartridge from the box. 2. Undo the sealing tape and carefully pull out in the direction of the arrow to
remove the black protective sheet from the cartridge. 3. Place the cartridge in position and, using the handle, slide it into the
machine until it clicks. 4. Pull out the cartridge tape completely without breaking it. 5. Push the cartridge again so that it is correctly placed. 6. Close Cover A until it latches and then close Tray 5 (bypass tray). 7. Close the front cover.
What has most likely happened is the tab that actuates the front cover has broken off.
When you open the cover, you will see a bar code with some numbers under it. Look toward the top of that cover above that strip. There should be a piece of plastic about an inch long and thinner than a popsicle stick.
They have a tendency to break off.
All you should have to do is:
-replace the old drum with the new replacement.
-with the front door open press the Clear/Back button
-press the number 1 button and when ?accepted? appears on the LCD close the front cover.
That should do it. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
