Hello... my Xerox 8500 displays a message saying "Close front cover to continue" The cover IS closed. Seems like it might be a relay switch? Is there anyway to reset? I've tried turning it off and back on again... Any help is appreciated !

Re: Close front cover message
Well here is what I can tell you.
Open the front cover. Staring you right in the face should be a bar code/number sticker. Look forward from that and there shoule be a small plastic tab, about a half inch long and less then the thickness of a popsicle stick. It is the front cover interlock switch actuator. It may be broken off.
Or look for the opening where that tab should slide into the machine the switch may be dislogded or broken.
Probably that tab has broken off not actuating the switch on that cover.

there are switch behind the front door that are activated by the front cover. you may have a broken or missing actruator pin on the front door. look very carefully on the door for anything that seems to be missing. if ther is just use a piece of paper to actuate the switch. jaime
The onlty thing I can find close to this is.
Acording to the manual its a ink loader error like your loading the wrong type of ink like the puzzles pieces arent matching and hitting the sensor flags right. Yours by the 8 is referring to the black ink. Anyway go to troubleshooting on the control panel. then to service tools. when in service tools press and hold the up arrow while still pressing the up arrow press the down arrow. the display should say hidden menus. go to diagnostic mode press enter go to funtion menu. then go to clear ISC fault and enter. ISC=ink stick count fault. I hope that helps. Just to let you know Ive had nothing but problems with third party ink and once its in the system its hard to get out so I would watch what im doing with my expensive equipment
Press the on-line / off-line key on the printer operator panel to set the printer off-line.
Use the upper softkeys to scroll to the 'Replace printhead' card
Press the softkey below the 'Replace printhead' card to enter the wizard. An introduction screen displays the message 'Use this wizard to replace printheads. A roll is needed for calibration.'
Press the key for 'Next'. The screen displays the message 'Select roll to use'. The system does a calibration at the end of the wizard. You can only calibrate on the defined media types. When calibration is not possible with the media available on the printer, the system asks you to load the correct media. When calibration is possible with one of the rolls, the system automatically uses the correct media roll. When calibration is possible with both rolls, use the lower softkeys to select the roll to use.
Press the key for 'Next'. The screen displays the message 'Carriage moving to centre position...' while the carriage moves to the centre. The screen displays 'Open top cover.'
Open the top cover. The screen displays the message 'Replace printheads' and the printheads that you must replace. Find the correct printhead number on the printhead carriage.
Press the front of the printhead cover to unlock the cover.
Open the printhead cover.
Pull out the printhead and remove it.
How to place a printhead
Remove the protective tape from the new printhead.
Do not touch the contact and nozzle areas of the printhead after you remove the protective tape.
Place the new printhead in the printhead holder. The printhead only fits in one way.
Close the printhead cover.
After you replaced the defective printhead, press the softkey for 'Next'
The screen displays the message 'Make sure that all head covers are properly positioned.' Press the key for 'Done'. The screen displays the message 'Close top cover.'
Close the top cover. The screen displays the message 'Carriage moving to home position...'
The screen displays 'Calibrating...'. The calibration process takes several minutes. You can stop the calibration process at any time. Press the key for 'Cancel' to stop the calibration process.
I believe the "relay Unit" on that machine is the section that transports copies to either the finisher (if installed) or the exit tray on the LEFT side of that machine. Sometimes neither of these units are present, but the relay unit may still be installed. There are 2 flip up covers on that section (left and right), and you will probably see that one of them (usually the left one) has come unclipped, or perhaps the plastic clip that holds it closed is broken. If you flip up this unit. You will see a black button at the back end that is engaged when ther unit is closed. If you simply pree this button with your finger, hopefully the message will go away - this may at least help you troubleshoot what is causing the "cover open" message). Even if the clip is broken, it is often just a matter of seating the unit correctly so that the switch is engaged when the unit is closed. There is also the same switch on the right cover that could be causing the problem, but this cover doesn't sem to get damged as often. I hope this helps. Please let me know.
Your Xerox has two cartridges - one is the drum cartridge and the other is a toner cartridge. Please check the following I've researched from your user guide:
Replacing the Drum Cartridge
The drum cartridge is a customer replaceable unit. After approximately 55,000 copies/
prints, the machine will display a warning message before the drum reaches the end of
life. Order a replacement cartridge now to insure continuous operation.
Country Part Number for the drum cartridge replacement All countries 13R589
Removing the Old Drum Cartridge 1. Pull the front cover towards you to open it. 2. Open Tray 5 (bypass tray) if necessary, and then open Cover A while lifting up
the release lever. 3. Lift up the colored lever, and slide the drum cartridge out until you can lift the
handle on top of the cartridge. 4. Hold the handle and remove the cartridge from the machine. NOTE: When replacing the drum cartridge, make sure that the new cartridge is the
correct one specified for the machine.
Recycling the Drum Cartridge
The drum cartridge is designed to be re-manufactured. To recycle used drum
cartridges, return them to Xerox in the original packaging. Return labels are included
with each new cartridge.
Inserting the New Drum Cartridge 1. Remove the new drum cartridge from the box. 2. Undo the sealing tape and carefully pull out in the direction of the arrow to
remove the black protective sheet from the cartridge. 3. Place the cartridge in position and, using the handle, slide it into the
machine until it clicks. 4. Pull out the cartridge tape completely without breaking it. 5. Push the cartridge again so that it is correctly placed. 6. Close Cover A until it latches and then close Tray 5 (bypass tray). 7. Close the front cover.
There is a small tab that actuates a cover switch that has broken off. Hard to determine. You can look for an opening with that cover open to determine where the hole for the switch is, you will find that the tab that goes through that hole is snapped off, you have to replace the cover.
You can call 1-800-835-6100 and order the cover if you do not have a maintenance agreement.
What has most likely happened is the tab that actuates the front cover has broken off.
When you open the cover, you will see a bar code with some numbers under it. Look toward the top of that cover above that strip. There should be a piece of plastic about an inch long and thinner than a popsicle stick.
They have a tendency to break off.
All you should have to do is:
-replace the old drum with the new replacement.
-with the front door open press the Clear/Back button
-press the number 1 button and when ?accepted? appears on the LCD close the front cover.
That should do it. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
