To move the rear brake piston in so that you can fit the new pads, you have to undo the bolt on the back of the caliper, the one obove the bolt that holds the bracket for the parking brake cable, once this is removed, use a 4 or 5mm allen key and turn the adjuster anti-clockwise until the piston moves in until it's in far enough to fit the new pads, once the pads are in and the caliper is fastened, adjust the pads by turing the alle key clokwise until the pads starts to rub up against the disk....that should sort it out.

When fitting new rear brake pads to a 2004 Mazda 323, how do I move the pistons back into the cylinders to accomodate the new pads?

Applying pressure will make the piston go back in but you can kick and release the brake before the job is done , use a wire band to run over the piston to hold it tight so that it does not move off, the pads can be pushed into with the wire holding the piston till in place when it can be taken off.

Cant get brakes back on my 1992 gmc jimmy I cant get them to line up and go on the rotor

More than likely you have not fully compressed the caliper piston into the caliper. Take the old inner brake pad and clip it on back onto the piston. With a large clamp (one side on the back of the caliper behind the piston and the other on the face of the old brake pad) and compress the piton slowly by tightening the clamp. It needs to bottom out completely. Remove the clamp and old brake pad and install the new pads. Make sure that when you install the caliper to the rotor that the brake pads stay locked in position and it will slide over the rotors and fit snug.

I cant seem to get the rear brake caliper to compress so it will fit over the new pads

There are two stlyes of calipers for the rears. One is ratcheting so the piston has to be turned back to colaspe. The other type compresses with a C clamp. If a large retaining spring is on the inner part of the caliper you have the ratcheting type. A brake cable will attach to the spring as well. If not it will compress instead

Can't get pistons to turn back in,after replacing rear brake pads

hi from uk the rear calipers pistons need to be rotated with piston also pressed inwards there is a tool specially for this you can purchase from auto supermarket ? it is simple to operate and the cheapest tool i recommend is one made by draper tool company other than this try pushing piston whilst rotating clockwise it would also help if you slacken bleed nipple on caliper to ease pushing piston back do not forget to bleed brakes later hope this helps?

Just taken the old brake pads off the car and the pistons wont move in order to get the new pads on

With the new pads in place, loosen the bleeder valve a few turns while applying pressure to the pads. A small amount of brake fluid will likely spray out as the pads and pistons move, so have a pan or a rag ready. Once the pads are flush with the edges of the caliper, retighten the valve - making sure that the pads don't move.

How do i change both front and rear brake pads on a 2004 mazda rx8?

CHANGING FRONT BRAKE PADS
Jack up the car. Take off your tire. Find the bolt on the back of the caliper and take it off. This should release the caliper, pull the caliper off the disc. Now you should be able to take the pad out. Replace the pad. You'll need a special tool to reset the caliper. As the brakes wear down, the caliper gets tighter so the brakes still work. I'm not sure exactly what its called, but you can borrow one from auto zone. Follow the instructions that come with it to reset the caliper. Slide the caliper back over the disc. If it doesn't go on, you need to reset the caliper more. Put the relese bolt back in. Put your tire back on.Drive slowly and test the brakes.
CHANGING THE REAR BRAKE PADS
The rear brakes on the rx8 are a bit different than most setups...be careful! The only way to move the piston back into the caliper is by way of a special allen head bolt that is directly behind the piston, on the back side of the caliper, installed under a 14mm bolt.
You have to remove this bolt to gain access to the allen head. As you loosen the allen head bolt(counter-clockwise), the piston will move back into the caliper.
Installation is pretty typical, again, the allen head bolt being the unusual part. The manual says to tighten this bolt until the pads contact the rotor, then loosen the bolt 1/3rd of a turn, then reinstall the 14mm bolt.

Brakes

if you are only replacing pads and the rotor you should not need to open the bleeders. they are located on the calipers. all you have to do to back off the piston of the caliper is to use a small C-clamp. you place the stationary part on the back of caliper and the screw part on the piston of caliper. turn the screw until the piston moves back into the caliper housing this should allow you to put the new pads on and fit the caliper over the rotor. hope this helps. please rate this solution. thanks
