Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
Not all WD have inside the box a software product key for booldy Memeo Auto Backup thing. You need to buy the software and until wou get tha cash you can use free trial version.
They are quite pathetic how the trick the clients with unfriendly software provided by a "third party".
So we need to dig for more cash for the "master of puppets"
Next time I will buy only products with hard and soft inclucluded in the box. I on a learning "curve".
Here I attached the answer from teh WD site:
WD Anywhere Backup
WD Anywhere Backup comes on our drives as a 30 day trial version software only. In order to use it, permanently, you will need the product key. The following Western Digital products come packaged with the product key:
We do not provide a product key for Memeo AutoSync. Memeo AutoSync is a 30 day trial version, and you will need to purchase it from Memeo in order to obtain a product key.
I hope that helps!

I just called tech support on this. They wanted me to install a newer version of the software from the restricted download site, that can automatically register the software. After downloading and installing, it still did not work. My attempt to get it registered ended up with a message "A suitable Western Digtal Drive that allows auto registration of software was not found".
Exit the WD Anywhere Backup software running on your system tray.
Find the file "WDDriveInfo.exe" file under c:\Program Files\WD\WD Anywhere Backup, or wherever the software is installed on your hard drive.
Double click on it, and it will run in dos mode, and close the screen. Repeat this step about 25 times.
Open "WD Anywhere Backup" program, and you will see a registration screen. Enter the email address and press sned or continue.
It will open a browswer session, and connect you to the software site, and will automatically register the software. A painful process, but it worked for me.

Apparently if you buy the 'My book" from western digital, you only get the trial version of memeo. If you want to keep using it, you need to buy it...
...to get a memeo product key (which is distinct from all the western digital numbers on the packaging and the drive itself)

Product keys were included with all WD Hard drives EXCEPT one (I think its called "essential edition". If you have that model, you must buy the key. For the other models the key is supposed to be on the "quickstart" guide.
I discovered this info on the Memeo site. My problem was that I can't tell what model I have, so I didn't know if I was supposed to have a key or not. I did find my old quickstart guide, but no numbers were on it. The WD has a model number (but not a name), and is so timy it cannot be read without a magnifying glass. Didn't want to try to dig up the receipt because it was 2 years old.
(I just now tried to install the Memeo software however). So if you have to go to the Memeo site to figure out if you were supposed ot have a key, make sure you have a magnifier so you can tell them what the numbers are.
Anyway, I have Memeo installed on another computer that came with a different HD (seagate). Intestingly enough, the Key for that one also worked on my WD HD. So if you have a Memeo key on another HD, you could try using that one. I' d love to give you the number I used, but the FIXYA people would delete this message and you wouldn't see it anyway.
There are crack programs out there, but I'm always afaid to download something that cryptic (& illegal), for fear of virus or spyware contamination that might get past my scanner (by allowing the download) - since I just can't figure out why someone would invent something to give away for free anyway.

I had this same problem. For me, the problem actually lied in my default web browser. Although I had Internet Explorer installed (which is required to register your product), Chrome was my default browser and the installer was trying to use that which is not capable of handling the ActiveX controls for registration. Try changing your default browser to IE7 or 8, re-install the Auto-Backup Software and it should then register automatically (no product key necessary because they no longer ship them with the My Book World).

There is a very small sticker either on the back of the manual or stuck onto one of the pages inside it

In order to help you I'd need to know which product this is. If you're talking about the serial number, which you need in order to register the device with Western Digital (so you can easily get it repaired under the warranty, etc.) then it should be on the back where you plug the USB and power cables in.

Hi....It seems you have the same problem as I did with a 640 WD product and memeo restore. If you are like me and purchased any backup like pro or premeium or regular, you may remember that you registered on line. You did. Well, minus a password you are one step away. Memeo online keeps an available download and you can access this by entering your username. If you have not registered at memeo, you are soon to be retired. If you need register your WD product you will not have a product key. All purchase and key info are available online at memeo. A link will get you to your personal info with product key from your desktop.
