XL2 Tape Fault

My XL2 doesn't recognize the tape when inserted. The red tape icon flashes in the viewing screen and non of the transport controls as a result are operable. I've heard that you should keep to the same brand of tape, and that the XL2 are prone to this sort of problem. The tape being used has worked in the machine but was leht in situ for approx. six weeks. Any adice?

This might sound obvious, but did you make sure that you pushed in the "inner" tape compartment before closing the outer one? If you put the tape in and then only close the outer compartment cover, then it can't recognize the tape.

i have read once that the XL2 tape carriage was designed with the Panasonic tape in mind.

Canon Technician tell that you can use any brand tape, but to run the dry head cleaner before switching to another tape. they did not specify how many tapes that you ran before to use the head cleaner before switching.

But you can stick with Fuji tapes too. but please stick to one brand tape. The advise is true for all camcorders - you should avoid switching tapes.
The combination of different coatings can combine and create gunk on the heads/drum.

editing and never use the cam

IF YOU SHOOT CANON, STAY AWAY FROM JVC AND PANASONIC! USE THE SAME
BRAND TAPES! If you need to use a different brand of tape from another
shooter then use a head cleaner after every use of a different brand
    then what you shoot with!

I have shot with the XL2 for years, it is a wonderful camera.

We made a video about it here:

    http://www.dvcreators.net/canon-xl2/

You can use any tape in it, however, it is still suggested you STICK
WITH THE SAME BRAND AND MODEL OF TAPE. Switching tape brands often has
been linked to lubricants gumming up on heads and causing dropouts.

if at all as per otacon asked..
this is happening with only one tape means tape would be faulty...
but its advisable ( i think its must rather than telling advisable) to run the head cleaning before using.

    because its obvious.
each company uses different chemicals and uses its own formula for making the tapes. this only brings in the difference in quality of tapes.
so you will need to run head cleaning before shifting to different brands.
but it would be more better to stick to same brand.
dont go for panasonic and jvc..both are pieces of junks i would say

Yes thats true Canon recommends only dry tape .... Think u have used wet style tape ..

Make sure that the cassette's record prevention tab is slid to the
"off" position. This is the single most common problem regarding to the error.

Just to be safe, make sure to clean your camera heads before switching tapes, though.

I have a problem with a Conon XL2 camcorder. It is flashing CP2 in the view finder when shooting to tape.

The camcorder is simply informing you that the Custom Preset 2 settings are in effect. Refer to the "Using the Custom Preset" section of the manual (page 68 in my copy). If you need a manual you may download a copy here.

Red tape image blinks in view finder and when you insert tape there is no change and will not reconize that tape is been loaded?

This is usually caused by a defective component in the tape detection circuitry and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Canon xl2 will not take the tape it says remove tape in viewfinder.camera is dry whats going on here

Canon XL series will indicate "remove tape" sign when the head does not read the data when inserted. You probably have clogged head and probably needs cleaning. Depending on the condition of the clogged head, you can try by running head cleaning tape for about 10 sec. If that does not resolve, it shoud be cleaned and adjusted by trained technicians. it means you have no back up battery installed to save time/date info. I know on the GL2 if you open the LCD screen there is another small plastic tab you can open and insert a relatively small battery. Do it and the icon will disappear. Otherwise its no big deal. If you dont need time/date stamps on your tapes then there is no need to install the battery unless you are just annoyed.

Cant record

C32 error codes are usually cassette or tape transport related. Can you eject the tape? Try inserting a new tape to see if the fault is with the tape itself.

If this doesn't work, I suggest that you take your camera to a service centre.
