SATA drive I have a P4M800PRO-M and would like to use it with a single MAXTOR SATAII/300 basic SATA drive. I hooked the drive up it is detected by the BIOS but the WIN XP installation CD will not format the drive. I am trying to do a fresh install of XP on the drive. What BIOS settings are needed for the MB to use the drive. I've also installed the The force 150 jumper isin the default (installed) position. TIA

First check to see if the pc is set to boot from the cd first. If that doesn't work, try and see if you can go to the command line. If you can, change the directory to your cd drive. For example: D:, then type cd d:, when you see the D:, then type setup.exe

is this an external drive or internal?
the answer is based on them.,
if internal drive,
then use BIOS to see if BIOS can see it,
if bios can see, it good, that dont make a drive good
only that it can talk and PNP,
if BIOS can not see it.
1: drive is not plugged in to data and power. (swap cables and ports)
2: or the drives dead. totally, no comms at all.

try all sata power cables
try all sata data ports on MOBO, some are RAID only.
if wInDoZ cant see a drive, no app on earth can either.

always start with bios. that is the first step always.
unless external drive. those are more tricky, ASK !

Please, i have two hard drives, the first one is maxtor 80 gb (which i want to make master),the other one is sata sumsung 750 gb (which i want to make salve), how could i get that done ?

Hi!
That can be done from BIOS setings. First check that both the disks have been detected by the BIOS.
Usually, the hard disk at sata1 (1st sata connector on board is for master drive.
Secondly, look for the bootup option and choose maxtor as primary drive (to boot from it)

Hope this helps!. let me know about *********** board details also, if further any assistance is needed.

If you will be loading xp on the new drive,You will just need to press F6 during the setup when ask if you want to install 3rd party driver, and follow the instruction and put the SATA driver disk in when ask.(Even during xp setup It will say SCSI device until all the drivers for it are loaded)

I have a new 8ogb sataII Exelstor hardisk which i

Windows XP does -not- have native SATA support and therefore will not recognize a SATA drive without first installing 3rd party drivers.
To go around this problem without installing drivers check your BIOS. There might be something in there where the bios will emulate an IDE controller.

If not, you'll need a floppy and the sata drivers. A flash drive will also do if the motherboard bios supports legacy USB. To find the drivers, simply go to the motherboards manufacturers website.

PC won't boot if SATA drive connected, drive works fine if plugged afterward

Try Hirens Boot CD. It has a lot of programs on it to detect format etc.
I think your hard drive has a missing or corrupt MBR and it needs to be replaced.
When I have had a hard dive not recognized I hve used Super Fdisk to format and reset hard drive.

System won't recognize SATA drive

Seagate shows you're did not come with a jumper.
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=63557ea70fafd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US
Try removing the jumper. Check if bios see's the drive. Most motherboards that do not support SATAII will automatically reduce the drive/split the SATAII down to 150MB's. If you had or have another SATA & the bios saw or see's the SATA than it's not the motherboard's SATA controller. Take some time & go through Seagate's trouble shooter site.

If the bios did find another SATA other than the ST3750640AS-RK than it's possible the drive has an issue & may need to be exchanged.

Lets hope it's the drive & not the motherboard controller.

No Boot (system does post) - Hard drives not detected • Check jumper settings on all IDE devices • Verify that IDE controller is configured correctly in the BIOS • Check to make sure that the drive is connected to the correct controller • Make sure drives are configured correctly for RAID • Verify Onchip IDE configuration for ICH5 SATA operation is set correctly • Test drives with different IDE/SATA cables
