sounds like a dodgy black toner - is it a 3rd party toner - had this quite a lot myself at work with cheaper cartridges. to print a cleaning page just flick through the menu to diagnostics or print quality - in here you should find some cleaning tools of the machine
If the test page from pc or the machine test page doesnt show black, what you can do is to clean the printhead. To do that press the Ink Management button on the control panel and select cleaning press ok then press the up or down arrow key to select Black press ok and press Black Start. After the cleaning process print another test page. Compare the 1st and 2nd test page if it's improving, you may need to do this 3-5 times.
Hope this helps

I don't have this but I try to solve your problem :
In the printer and fax, right click on your device name, choose maintenance and run Cleaning, Deep Cleaning, Roller Cleaning and Bottom Plate Cleaning.
This is the test to determine toner or fuser issue. Print a test page When you hear the paper feed into the machine open the top to stop the machine Remove the toner cart. You should be able to see the page with printing on it. (This is before the page hits the fuser) If you can see the smudge or marks on the page the problem is most likely the cartridge or cleaning roller but NOT the fuser. If the page is clean the problem is most likely the fuser.
Print is brown: mingles yellow with bk and cyan and red.
Did you use generic ink? You have to use a set of original brother ink carts: dinsert the original carts. press menu then start b/w copy then fourtimes arrow-up. when machine is in maintenance mode press 7 then 6 then 4 then start b/w copy. machine will initiate the carts and do some power cleaning. whnen finished press 7 then 6 then 3 then start b/w copy. machine does a power purge. leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. Do run a test print. If you cant see any mag. do the power purge two days later. If your not lucky then (you cant see ANY mag squares on test print) the head is defective and needs replacemnt.
Those printer tonners are very tricky to refill and a bad refill induse on bad printing so you can clean the drum (the round green thing) with isopropilic alchool. If it continues it indicates that the blade ( inside tonner plastic blade that cleans the excess tonner powder) is durty and you can clean it too with the same alchool. If it continues replace the tonner cartridge.
try to clean the printer from smeared tonner and the transfer.
the grey print could be as a result of printing using application sofware. make sure the tonner economy mode is not active form the application software,if it was turn it off and save, then reprint.
