Toshiba 42WH36P rear projection TV has wavy lines

I have been experiencing problems with my Toshiba rear projection TV, which started around two weeks ago and has gotten worse. When I switch on the TV, there are wavy, jagged horizontal lines across the screen. I have had a look at my arial, set top box, cables etc to see if it was any of those causing the problem. Switching the tv off and on again makes the picture appear a little bit clearer, but it's still no way near watchable. I am hoping that it is not the TV as I have only had it for 4 Years! I would like to know if it sounds like a typical description of a problem found with Toshiba rear projection TVs (if there ever is one!)

My 42H83 started with minimal picture scramble that would clear up over a period of about 30 minutes and has progressed to full screen scramble that won't go away for about an hour and even there there are episodic flickers in the picture. Don't know what to do about it, not warrantied and the tv is 4 years old, however it has only been in use for about 2 of those years. I don't want the run around from a repair service either. Anyone have this issue resolved and what was the solution? Mind you, I am female so keep the jargon simple please. The tv is too heavy to move by myself as it is placed in a built in about 3 feet off the floor.

Hi i have the above tv and the image is all jittery..but when u switch the teletext on or the menu's they appear fine..i also tried plugging a laptop into the component ports but its just the same.
Anyone know what the problem is? im very good at soldering and would try to repair it if i knew what was the bad component..

The problem is going to be a bad NEXT HYPER UNIT module. this is the digital scan card in the tv. try using the componenet inputs and if the tv works ok then you know that the HYPER UNIT is the problem. the reapir process for a "do-it-yourselfer" is too involved and would recommend a serivce center for this repair.

can you post a pic of the screen? Its hard to diagnose that type of problem with out seeing as it could be a deflection or a signal issue.

The STKs are common and if you have an experienced electronics tech around they can replace them for much less money but the tech must have advanced soldering and IC exchange experience.

The STK ics, two of them, can be purchased on line for around $20 to $40 each.

http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Toshiba&BrandName=Toshiba&ModelNu...

Partstore has two models available - one for around $40 and another for around $55.

The part number is STK392-110 and if you google you can find them for as little as $6/each but I don't recommend the cheap ones as they are not reliable.

It takes a good tech around 3 or 3 hours to take the old ones out and solder in the new ones. Also, it is likely one or two resistors are burnt and will need replacing as well.

this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
