This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the component section on the base of the washer.

There are springs and friction pads designed to keep the inner tub from moving too much when agitating and especially spinning.

One or more of the springs may have come loose or the friction pads may have worn.

Following is the Whirlpool / Kenmore installation and service manual for top load direct drive washers with a troubleshooting section.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

Also see the following for how to remove the cabinet in order to gain access to the springs and pads.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

If the springs and pads are fine, I'd consider looking into the "agitator cam" in the transmission.

If the cam doesn't lift the agitator gear high enough during the spin cycle, (as we had) you would get a major vibration.

See the section in the Whirlpool manual on how the transmission works and the agitator cam.

We had to replace ours and the vibration stopped.

Only if you need to, look at the following.

Assuming that you know how to remove the cabinet, agitator (you don't need to remove the tub), pump, motor and transmission the agitator cam and follower use the same whirlpool part number 62580/01. This is a plastic set used to raise the agitate gear on the shaft.

I had the same problem with gear grinding and this solved it.

Pull the transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (15 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

Remove the transmission cover.

Pull off the spin pinion.

Push down on the agitate spring and remove the spring clip. Note where is attaches to the main shaft.

The two plastic agitate cam parts pull right off. Don't lose the washer on top of the cams.

Replace the cams, washer, spring and clip, pinion, oil (assuming you drained the oil first), cover and clutch parts.

Line up the transmission so that the release cam on the brake drum will snap onto the clutch spring retaining clip and put all parts back in the washer.

The basic tools are screwdriver, small socket set with up to a 1/2" socket, vice grips or good pliers (to remove and replace clips)

Hello. i have a kenmore washer machine 70 series that jumps all over the place when its on spin cycle and yes I did make sure the washing machine is level. I just don't understand whats happening

Hi P, I don't understand why I'm getting these questions, because I'm in the automobile section, but as I'm here and so is your question, here's the answer! The machine is being thrown out of balance. Try loading the clothing more evenly and see what happens. If the fault reappears it will be the bearings and centralization mechanism inside the spinning basket. Keep in mind that centrifugal weight is increased as the tub rotates. If all the clothes (or most are on one side) the weight increases with the speed and will make the whole machine shake. If its something which has recently started after having had the machine for some time, I would suspect a bearing or broken mounting inside the spin tub. Regards John

In spinning mode inside tub hits outside tub of washing machine of Kenmore .70 series, two speed automotic washer.

hi,
thats a 35 year old washer. we had one for years. the springs have lost their tension. youll have to run smaller loads, you can try sears parts direct for springs but they may not have them. It may be time to retire it. keep it for a backup in case you new one has a problem..

I have a top loading kenmore 70 series washer. It

The drain line is probably clogged. Maybe that a sock or other piece of clothing get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. In this case it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump.Remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out. In case it clean there, check the outer tub port- open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then, try to remove the clothing through the port.

Kenmore 20722 Series 70 top loader. Makes a load, intermittent banging noise as the tub attempts to spin. The tub seems to engage intermittently, too.

Check the vibration dampers are solid and the mounts good. Also the springs on the bottom of the drum.
