I have a 88 Fiero GT V6 that has sat for over a year without starting. I put in 5 gallons of gas, and used starting fluid. Starts, but only keeps running while fuel is poured into intake. I suspect water condensation in tank. Can I disconnect the fuel filter and run the fuel pump to remove water from tank and line? What about the injectors?

1) Running fuel pump to remove water from tank will likely not empty it all, but it might help. Will still be some liquid in bottom of tank.

2) More than likely, the gas has gummed up and is no good, While your draining of the tank will help, may still need to change the fuel filter and clean the injectors. The ability to keep engine running while pouring into the intake is a good sign, but mayfind that more parts need to be cleaned and replaced prior to solving the problem.

When I put another 2.8L short block in my Fiero that hadn't run in years, the injectors were actually gummed up and it took about 3 minutes for enough of them to free up for the engine to run on it's own. A few minutes with some new gas going through the rail was all it took to get the engine back to life after it's long period of inactivity.

How do I fix and 97 GMC 1/2 ton with a 350 vortec. Runs great once running. Sat for 5 years. If sits more than 5 minutes wont start without shot of starer fluid

have you changed the fuel filter and emptied the gas tank and put fresh gas in? Stale gas will not start as well as fresh gas and there could be water from condensation in the tank.

87-88 fiero runs but only tops out at about 30 after i get up to speed which takes a good block or two slowly. smokes a little but i think its because it has sat for 6 plus years. any tests i can run or...

I had the same problem, maybe 25MPH top speed and difficult to start. Changed out the old gas, installed fresh high octane-problem was worse.
The ignition system was faulty. Pull a High voltage wire and you should see a bright blue spark and hear a crackling noise. If you see a weak yellow spark, you found your problem.
Could be a bad/weak ignition module-rather famous in a Fiero due to heat exposure. Bad pickup coil in the distributor. I replaced the entire (rusty) distributor with a new/rebuilt unit a long with a new Ignition module. Solved the problem!

I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3100 V6 thats been sitting for almost 2 years without being started, I changed the battery and spark plugs and tried to start it, it turns over but will not start. It...

Odds are the fuel is stale. Gas turns if it is sat for a lengthy period of time. I would suggest :Drain the fuel tank, Take a 5 gallon can of gas. STP makes a product called (Ithink the makes is )Stihl.
It is a bottle you can see a red liquid in. It has a small measuring cup built into the top of the bottle.
Add the recommended amount to the 5 gallons of gas. Replace the fuel filter and if the plugs have not fouled, it should light right off. I'd suggest changing the oil and filter as well.
Good luck

1987 Ecoline van V-8 engine hasn't been started in about 7 years. It ran good before that. What do I have to do first to start it and get it running?

I would change all the fluids and either try dry gas or i would recommend that the gas tank be thoroughly drained and new gas put in the tank.If you have a hard time getting started try to use starter fluid in carburetor or if you have none just use gas. If the vehicle is equipped with fuel injectors locate air filter and follow air duct to engine that is where starter fluid or gasoline will have to be pored to prime the injectors.if it don't start the engine should be tuned up with a major tune up replace all filters ect even if it starts without tune up i would tune it up asap!

Car ran out of gas, when gas was put in the car just cranks but wont start.

I know with some cars, you need to put in at least 5 gallons of gas after running out in order to reset the sensor so it starts sending the gas

88 fiero starts on it own, but wont stay running.

the brain is not sending the proper fuel pressure codes to the fuel rail to evenly distribute the fuel to the intake and fuel rail.
perform a fuel pressure test check on it ok? also run a diagnostic scan on it and see what codes come out.

Do I need to prime the engine after it has sat for more than a year. If so how do I go about this?It is a 1986 buick century limited with the 6cyl engine.

No you do not have to prime it. But you should change oil and put 5 gallons of fresh gas in it before starting. The oil collects moisture from sitting. The gas gets stale andding more will dilute old.
