Oh my goodness. You are genius. I am almost embarresed to admit to anybody I had a floppy in the computer, much less that I own them. (Most people dont even use them any more) So I just spent 30 min on the phone with my IT guy and set up an appt for a house call. Which he will probably would have charged me an arm and a leg. re. You were absolutely right and I thank you.
God Bless you. ; D

Seriously USB ports with Mac OSx on sewing machines ?
1. What is your error message on screen.
2. Have you checked the usb stick on any other computer ?
3. backup and initialize. how to repair non readable USB on mac
I don't know the circuit of this sewing machine but it gives me the impression the light and the board are in series with a fuse. If this is true the light will burn out and cause the screen to go black as well. If the fuse would go out the same thing would be true. Anyway, change the light first. If this doesn't work you will need to replace the fuse. If there are still problems it will need the mother board to be replaced. Tell me how this worked out.
Delete all prior programs. Go to singer and find the patch for it prior adding the disk. It happened to me twice and finally I was able to do it when I deleted all prior futura programs. Hope it helps.
Your PC's floppy disk is not readable by the disk drive, probably because you don't use the drive as much, and it has gathered a layer of dust and dirt inside. It's necessary for you to clean the floppy drive using a special disk with a special cleaner liquid. However, with floppy drives going the way of the dinosaurs, it may be difficult to find such item nowadays.
Try getting one of those small compressed air canisters to clean your keyboard and try blowing the dirt off the mechanism of your drive.
If that fails, it's possible your floppy disk has gone bad. Data on these disks have only a certain life span measured in years.
If that also fails, then write to PFAFF and ask for a replacement disk of the same version of the software, sending them proof of purchase, etc, so that they will comply without any questioning.
Turn on the power switch while you are pressing the start/stop key, reverse key and auto-lock key.The LCD screen indicates(Press + Mark) You should see a ( + ) on the screen. Press the center of the plus mark with a non-sharp object. The mark moves and the machine beeps.Do this until the screen says Adjustment END. Turn off the power switch. Wait 10-15 seconds and turn on the power switch and see if you can select stitches.
If this doesn't solve your problem and you can see the patterns on the screen you have another problem which will probably involve a visit to a technician either Janome or Elna trained(Model CE20)
If you can't see any patterns or they are faint then the LCD board needs to be rebuilt and an authorized Janome Dealer can remove the board, send it to Janome for a rebuild and reinstall it for you.Plan on spending more than $300 for this. If the machine works well, it is well worth if as it is a very nice machine. sewman7
Look at the floppy disk using Windows Explorer. You should see something to the effect of menu1, menu2, menu3 menu4 and one or two files with a file extension of something like .mhv or .phv . Inside the menu folders, you will find the .shv files.
Just writing the .vip or .hus to the floppy will not work.
Keep me posted and I'll try to come up with something more.
