I have exactly same problem and lots of people are reporting similar or exact malfunction of these laptops.
Usually happens when your warranty just expired.
HP is pretending that everything is OK, even they know exactly what's wrong, because they don't want loose money on recall.

Oh my god. Mine just broke down like that this very evening in the same way. And I had those legendary webcam issues when it was working (This morning !)

    dv2000 sucks ass man

Well send it in for warranty and then sell it - It sounds like a flaky motherboard to me by the symptoms - Generally speaking if you dont even get a beep without any RAM installed then the motherboard is probably bad.

Also damaged capacitors can cause a slow dieing effect to the display, from what I have seen during my research efforts to find solution for repairs to computers people have bought to me. I have only seen "dead" display lcd monitors that have repaired ok by replacing the $1 capacitors.

Yes, the GPU is faulty. either replace the systemboard or reflow the GPU. Second option is cheaper and you can do it yourself. Check out www.bootmylaptop.com there's a link for a diy guide to fix that issue.

Got a HP DV2000 boot then freezes

Hi,
It seems that the problem is with the display chipset ( assuming its with Nvidia chipset model).
If you are not a technical person, take out the mother board and do a reflow of the chipset with a blower or else take it to a qualified service person or authorised service center.

Dell Inspiron 1501 random freeze

If you can take the unit apart, check the LVDS cable from the mother board to the Formatter/T-con assy. a good cleaning with alcohol should work.
