1. Are you able to turn it on ?
If so, press the the "power on" button the second time to activate the menu.
Still no luck ! Try putting in a new battery and try again.
2. You cannot "reset" anything.
3. Open up "windows explorer"
4. Scroll down the left pane of the window till you see the "sansa" removable disk
5. Right click it and select "format"
6. After formatting, try adding your files back again.
7. Use the >= button on the player tp play the songs.
If you haven't try already you may need to format it because the boot up file may have corrupted or something.
To format follow these steps below:
First go to "My Computer" - now look for your mp3 player usually
named under for example "Removable Disk F", when you've found it
"Right-Click" on it then click on "Format", when format is complete try

Over a period of time your info can get corrupt from transering music back and forth.
To format plug it in to usb.
Go to my computer
It shows up as a removably disc, usually drive f:
Right click on drive f: (or the approriate drive) and click format.
Let me know what happens, you will have reload the player, also try bypassing the software you are using to tranfer, by opening up drive f: and clicking and dragging your music into it , or you can copy and paste it into drive f:
Your M240 may have encountered a corruption in its Music Database, and may be corrected by formatting and updating the firmware.
Try this: Manually switch the player to MSC mode and format through "Disk Management".
Here are the steps:
Locate the "Hold" switch on the side of the M240 and enable it (you should see an "orange-colored" surface when it's enabled)
Plug the M240 to your computer (recommended Operating System is Windows XP and above) and check Windows Explorer if the player is detected as a "Removable Drive"
Open "Disk Management" by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon, then selecting "Manage"
Your "Disk Management" window should be divided into 2 panes. On the left pane, click on "Disk Management"
On the upper right pane of "Disk Management", you should find the drive letter corresponding to your Sansa M240. The lower section also contains the drive # pertaining to your M240. Right-click on either drive letters pertaining to the M240 and select "Format". Follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure that the "Quick Format" checkbox remains un-checked.
In general, Disk Management is more the effective tool for formatting your M240 and assuming the format processing completed without any errors, proceed to updating the firmware of your player.

Save this file to your Desktop and run it while your M240 is still plugged in to your PC. Follow the on-screen prompts.
"Safely remove" your M240 from your PC and -- with a fresh battery -- power on your player. It should boot up normally.

This error message may largely be due to the corrupted Music Database file that the Sansa M240 creates to maintain an information pool on the music files downloaded to it.
Normally, if you are unable to completely format the player in Windows Explorer, there are still 2 other (and actually, more recommended) options that you have:
(1) Switching the M240 to MSC mode and formatting in "Disk Management". You can get to this window by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon and selecting "Manage". Make sure that you use the FAT file system to optimize the 1GB memory
(2) Switching the M240 to MTP mode and formatting the player in Windows Media Player 10 or version 11.
The mode of the M240 can be changed by accessing the menu and going to "Settings", then choosing "USB"
In general, formatting the player in "Disk Management" is more effective than formatting it in Windows Explorer.
