That's not a problem. It should function that way to keep your car from draining the battery.

Trying to install a new cd player in my 97 audi a4 but do not have a wiring diagram of the wires in the car

The easiest way to wire it is to get a pre-fit harness that fits the vehicle and stereo. Search the stereo's web site to find one.

How to install a aftermarket CD player in a 1997 Audi a4

hi, your best bet is to go to a stereo sales place like best buy and get an install kit specifically for your car, that way there is no cutting wires, everything will just plug right in and they sell kits that will allow you to install aftermarket units directly into the dash without cutting anything. Very professional.

Saving the code

Did you or someone put the stereo in?Or is it the original factory radio? If it is a new installation you missed a wire that is 12volts all the time weather the car is on or off that holds the memory.

1998 audi a4 car stereo

That's weird that they won't help you out. Usually if the stereo is in the car and you show proof of ownership of the vehicle, they'll give you the code for a fee. I'd call another Audi dealer (or a VW dealer - same corporation so they should be able to help) and see if they'll do it for you. Typically they look up the code based on the VIN of the vehicle, but obviously since your stereo was replaced they can't do it that way. Hopefully another dealer will be more understanding of the situation and will help you out. That's the only way to get it though.
