i just installed a sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. when i close the garage door with the remote the chain track bends up just about 12 inches before it closes all the way, and this only happens when the door is closing and not when it's opening.. can anyone give me some advice. thanks John
What is wrong is you need to adjust the limit on the door when it comes up. What it is doing is coming to far back on the track. You need to push the back limit forward away from the motor so the door does not come back and drop down on the inside of the garage. The opener is trying to push the door up hill to get it to close that is why you are getting the bend in the track.

I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener part # 41A4315-7. The D.O.C. cert # is K1027 and the date is 3/93.
Several months ago the garage door opener ceased to function. I do not remember the symptoms but opening the cover showed the gears were worn out.
I did not have time to repair the opener at the time so I bought a new Chamberlain and put the Chamberlain drive box in the system. The dimensions where exactly the same. I bought a gear replacement kit and replaced the gears.
I reinstalled the sears drive box but it does not operate from the wall switch. I have not tried a remote.
The unit has power. The light comes on and the green light comes on when I clear all of the old codes.
The safety sensors are both operating and have green lights.
There is no noise that indicates the motor is trying to turn but is bound up.
The motor and gear assembly turn freely by hand with the chain removed.

Nov 15, 2009 - Don, Thanks for help but door was not in open position. It was unattached to trolley that was in the full down position. The chain seemed tight when I connected the door to the trolley so I loosened the lock nuts and took some tension off the chain. Tried turning the travel controls and pressure controls to see it would operate but it only clicks when hard-wire button pushed. Thanks, Paul

If your door is in the open position and the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit you need to remove the bolt and then run the opener until the door closes. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit control' on the side of the motor unit and turn the control a couple complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover.
