VCR Tape playing problem

Hi there,

I have an akai AVR250 VCR which I have owned for about 5 years, and until recently has not given me any strife. However, when I put a tape in it, the player now stalls for 10 seconds, then goes to standby with "Err" in the display. By pressing the power button again, the display powers off, then returns to standby, and after 10 seconds, ejects the tape on its own, once more with the "Err" on the display.

I have already tried using different tapes, to no avail. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Cheers in advance,

Re: VCR Tape playing problem

The mean time between failure for the rubber parts in a VCR is about the same as the rubber parts on your car - about 5 to 7 years. You are due for a belt job.

Hi there. I have a AKAI VCR model VS-606 (Audio HiFi) unit which has never been abused and never presented a problem. Recently I was playing an old video tape (which as it turns out had been spliced due to...

No! The best thing to use to clean it is Servisol Video 40. This can be got from your local electronics shop or online. This stuff leaves no residue and cleans much better. You can use the cotton buds with it too.
It's much better to clean every six months or so depending on use. As dirt and grime can cause problems to the heads if left on. If someone smokes where it lives it will need more cleaning as you will find out when you clean it first time!

Panasonic VHS VCR Playback mode Tape Stuttering between LP and SP

This is most because the control head may be dirty, this haed picks up the pulses from the tape to regulate the speed & tracking if this is off it can produce both the faults you describe. Also it is possible the pinch roller (black roller on the right hand side of the deck mechanism, sits just in front of the control head), this may be worn especially as the machine is five years old, this will cause the tape to guided off alignment.

2 set channel press up/down arrows then press enter

3 select tape speed sp/ep

4 press and hold rec and press play on remote or just press record on unit

My vcr is locked

this used to happen to me years ago and hasnt happened again until today. I know there is a button to press and hold, but I dont remember which one it is. One solution I know works but can be a pain in the ass is to unplug it for a few minutes and when you plug it back in it SHOULD be free of the lock

Picture is jittery and voice is garbled with noise in background

I had the same problem recently with a Panasonic PV - V4521 which has worked for years for me. I tried everything including cleaning the heads with Q-Tips and pure alcohol. Nothing improved. I tried tape head cleaners. Nothing. So finally one day, as I was unscrewing the cables, this VCR fell down onto the bottom of my foot and drew blood. Now remember, I had been trying to fix this thing for at least 10 days.
So, I dragged it up and pounded the top of the VCR until the top caved in. Then, I opened my front door and tossed it so hard against the floor of my patio that pieces went flying everywhere. I gathered up the pieces and the twisted VCR, put it in a box, and tosses it real hard into the dumpster. It's fixed. I have no more problem with it.
