Radio works off battery but charger does not work

While the raido works with battery, the radio does not work off the AC power cord and the charger does not work. I have checked the internal fuse but it is fine.

Any ideas?

have same problem. The radio works with the battery fine-but it does not work when I plug the cord into the outlet. Check the fuse, that is fine.

I cam working on one and the transformers' primary winding is open. You will most likely need part # 429790-48 from Dewalt.

We have an Emerson PD6620 Radio/boombox. For many years, we used the AC outlet to play the component. We tried the battery route with new D batteries (8) and the unit did not work. Is there an AC/Battery...

This 6620 has a small micro switch where the a/c power cord plugs in. It will not run on battery power untill you pull the power cord out of the radio jack.

Works on batteries. does not work on ac. If you leave cord in it and turn off ac it still will not work, but if you take cord out of the unit it will then work on batteries.

If the AC cord can be removed from the back of the radio, then there is a mechanical lever inside where the AC cord plugs into the radio. That lever will cause the battery connection inside to be open (or disconnected) so that it will run off AC and not blow up the batteries. That is why it won't run on batteries when that cord is plugged in.

If it runs on batteries but not AC, find another cord to try. Most radios use about the same cord. If a second cord still doesn't make it work, it's most likely a fuse inside for the AC circuitry. they are usually mounted on a circuit board inside the radio right near where the AC cord plugs into the radio.

You should be able to take the radio apart (while it's unplugged from AC of'course) and find that fuse. If your good with a soldering iron you can replace the fuse. Replacements can be found at Radio Shack. If your reading these instructions to begin with, your probably not good with a soldering iron and you should just buy a new radio. Good luck.

Cord

Does this charger have an AC cord that plugs into it with a 2-prong end on the cord. If so, you should be able to find the cord at most electronic stores like Radio Shack.

If not, you can buy a replacement charger on ebay or from Amazon.

Questions:
1. Does the AC cord look ok? Not damaged?
2. Have you tried another AC outlet?
3. Does the AC cord unplug from the radio?

When you operate the radio from the AC power cord, the radio uses an internal power supply consisting of a step-down transformer, rectifier, and filter that converts the AC to DC to operate the radio.

When you run the radio off of batteries, it powers the radio directly. In some radios, when you plug the AC cord into the radio, it activates a switch that disconnects the battery voltage to the radio so that the batteries wont be damaged from the voltage created by the internal supply.

The radio can be powered by either the batteries or the internal supply. You don't want either supply affecting the other, so that is why a switch is sometimes used.

Since the radio works fine off of batteries, that would indicate that there is a problem with the internal power supply. This could be a blown fuse, bad transformer or bad rectifier diode.

Good Luck,
- Jim
