  • munji434 Jan 09, 2009

Same thing for me...At first, my PC would sometimes not be able to find the device. Then, when I tried adding songs, it said there wasn't enough memory space (though I made certain that it did). I tried deleting songs. Sometimes my PC gave me an error alert, other times it appeared to remove the file. But upon refreshing my screen the songs reappeared.
Now, it won't even turn on, saying it needs to be rebooted; yet my PCs won't see it or synch to it...what gives???

My RCA Opal M4008A has this same problem exactly:

It says, "BOOT ERROR! Please format unit." And my computer does not detect it.

I've had this about 1 year and 2 months. It hasn't been used a whole lot, either. I thought RCA was suppose to be one of the best brands.

I had this problem.  Backing up data wasn't a concern though, as I hadn't anything on the OPAL yet.
First I let the OPAL charge up for 3 hours.  Then I made sure it was powered off.  I had previously downloaded onto a PC the firmware update for the M4004 which also works on the M4008 and other OPAL's.  I plugged the OPAL into the PC, and booted up the PC. After installing the firmware package in the PC, you get an install screen for the new firmware with a format option for the OPAL.  I selected that option, but the "start" button was greyed out as the PC still couldn;t see the OPAL.  I pressed the reset (paperclip in the back of the OPAL) for about 15 seconds, than held down the "Play" button and waited.  Eventually the software recognized the OPAL, and started to format it.
If you get a dialogue to restart the PC, press NO!  You have to read the instructions that come with the install. Eventually I reformatted the drive, and installed new firmware.
BTW, there was no picture folder after I did this, so I just created a new folder named picture and it worked fine for the thumbnail pics I threw in there.  Also when I use a MAC with the OPAL, I power the MAC up with the OPAL off but attached.  After drag and dropping files into the OPAL, I power down the MAC.  After power down the OPAL will after a pause give the "building databases please wait" messages, then when done go to the start menu.  It is difficult on a MAC to eject the OPAL, it just reappears on the desktop so shutting down is the only safe way to administer the device.  But to update firmware, which is easily corrupted BTW if you unplug the thing at the wrong time,  you HAVE to do it on a PC operating system. Might work on an Intel MAC with a PC OS though.
Hope this helps.

I found Billy K. Dec.8 2007? the best advice...My opal is a m4002. I think Windows XP - Media 10 stop seeing my device and kept seeing it as MTP device... and the opal needed new firmware becuase of it.
Even though I was using Yahoo Jukebox for loading my opal.... it was my computer that no longer recognized the Mp3 player. I tried to go back to a earlier version of Media Player - that didn't work... and caused other errors.... did a system restore and tried again.
SEE Below for how I got it to recognize and hopes this helps others... all together took me 2 days to get this issue fixed.... whew.
--- Billy's advice worked but had to finagle it a bit - below I edited what he had to what I did......

  • I downloaded onto a PC the firmware update for the M4002.... sorry don't have the link handy but you can find easily enough - found 2 versions out there version http://download.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads/OPAL_FWUtility_v2.3.0.exe is the most current. (The RCA video site would not work as it tried to re-route me to Voxsupport.com and there was nothing there to help me regarding the opal!!) http://www.rcaopal.com/download.aspx - version 1.8 is a earlier one.
  • Anyway with that downloaded - I attached the the Opal to computer. My computer started trying to see the device but it had errors... It was kinda like hipcupping.... I ended up going into the View system info - clinking on Hardware - device manager - portable device (which had the error message on it) highlighted MTP - right clicked and then "disabled it" The computer then settled down and I think it changed from MTP to Opal.
  • Then I went to the firmware update which After installing the firmware package in the PC, you get an install screen for the new firmware with a format option for the OPAL. I selected that option, but the "start" button was greyed out as the PC still didn't see the OPAL. I pressed the reset (toothpick in the back of the OPAL) for about 15 seconds, than held down the Opals "Menu" button and waited (Keep holding that menu button until you get the firmware/format screen to allow you to click on the Start Format button..... Eventually the software recognized the OPAL, and started to format it. (again get ready and have your mouse over that start button as I had to do this a couple of times before I could momentarly have a chance to hit the format start button. If I wasn't fast enough to click it - it would grey out again... so kept resetting opal then holding down that menu button until the "start format" was avaible to select....
If you get a dialogue to restart the PC, press NO! You have to read the instructions that come with the install. Eventually I reformatted the drive, and installed new firmware. (I did not get a restart PC - but left Billy's advice in case others do.
  • ANYWAY - it works Great now..... Sorry this seems lengthy - it was relitivly easy after I figured out or just kept trying to do the reset on the opal and hold the menu button until the firmware allowed me to hit start.... Good Luck. Also - not sure but I think going into the hardware device manager was also a key for me..

No no plug it in and go to my computer. Find the Opal and open it. It will say internal storage. Right click on that and it will have an option to format. Mine did it too. Only reason I know how to fix.

The only way it would work for me was to reboot my computer with the MP3 player connected. When the computer booted up, it recognized the OPAl, I immediately ran the firmware utility to format and update the firmware.

My sons RC Lyra MC4004 had the same problem with "Boot Error".

You need the firmware updater from the Solution #4 link. Next using a MS XP machine run the updater and reset the unit while clicking the start button on the updater screen...you may have to do this multiple times before it works as XP is constantly trying to connect to the unit.

This is similar to the "chicken before to the egg" scenario but eventually with persistance it will work. You kinda needs two sets of hand to press the reset button while clicking the start button in the updater but I just bent a paperclip and reset with one hand and clicked "start" with the other.

Forget trying to update the software in Vista because as soon as the firmware updater gets a file system loaded, Vista opens a window to view the files which prevents the firmware updater from locking the files which is exactly how this problem was started in the first place for me.

My initial problem was the unit said it was full yet there were no files loaded on the unit, obviously the OS was corrupted which was taking up 4gb of space.

Good luck, this worked for me.

Plug it in another computer and format it, then do the firmware update in that same computer.

I first started using it with Vista Laptop, to fix it I try the Windows XP desktop and I download the firmware there too.

Hope it work.

If the player is turning on an off while connected to the computer, its not because of the opal. This a data sinc error caused by media player. The program goes into a loop trying to get the data to build and trying to get the player to start. Solution: Back up your computer - uninstall media player. The computer should now recognise the device as an MTC instead of MTP. (or you can go into system properties an change opal to MTC manually but who knows how to do that)

---MTC means that the computer will treat the player just a flash drive---

Personally, I find that treating the opal like a flash works way better and Media player 10-11 s^&^ks. If you want a good player you should download media player clasic because its not invasive about things and dosn't force auto-updates.

The problem you have with your opal could be the problem I had....

Now about the problem "I" had with the player. For some weird reason the player just stopped recognizing picture files with the Srgb color profiles and would not build a data base if I had pictures with Srgb profiles.
Solution: I had to save the pictures a Adobe RGB 1998. (I also found that you can save the photos in Paint and it works just like photoshop)

Yes, but you people aren't listening. The computer isn't recognizing the device. Which means that we can't get into My Computer to reboot it.

My sons player did this, I downloaded the software and it kept telling me to plug a player in. (it didnt see the player). The solution that worked here.

1. Mirror the drive.... Back it up on to your hard drive
2. Go to my computer and format the drive there.
3. Reset, hold it down for at least 15 sec.
4. Leave the player plugged into the usb........ 1 hr at least. I think it may be thinking it has more charge then it really does.
5. Unplug the player, Hit reset again.
6. Go into windows explorer and copy ALL of the files back on to the Player. Unplug, turn on. It starts building a database.

Hope it helps

Plug it in. Go to my computer then find the opal. double click on it. Then you should see internal storage. Right click on that and it will have an option for format. Mine did the same thing.

Posted on Dec 29, 2007

Plug it in. Open the fold it will say internal storage right click on that and say format.

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
