How do you get the hard drive out of a Toshiba

It's been a Long time since I have worked on one of these, so forgive me if my information is somewhat sketchy.

If memory serves the Left side of the case comes off. (Viewing the desktop computer from the front.)

There are clips underneath that need to be depressed, in order to remove this side cover.
From there with a flashlight, you should be able to view the other corresponding clips to depress, and remove the rest of the cover. Believe it lifts up so far, then slides forward.

At the Front Right side is the CD drive. There is a single screw you remove, and then the CD drive tilts up. From there you will see a single screw, that holds the harddrive in.

Once you are able to lift the harddrive up a bit, you wiggle the whitish colored plastic plug, side to side, as you pull out. This is a 4-pin Molex connector. It provides power from the power supply to the harddrive.

Sometimes this Molex connector can be QUITE tight, and hard to remove. DO NOT pull on the wires! If you use finesse, you can use a pair of pliers to wiggle it out. I advise using a Lot of finesse, as you can crush the plug. Sometimes it requires a bit of force!
The Molex plug looks like this,

Then the 40-pin interface cable connector is removed. (Flat ribbon cable goes to this connector) Use a Lot of finesse here, as the tiny pins can be bent Quite easily!

Now the harddrive is in your hand, and you can examine it more closely.

The 4-pin Molex connector only goes in the harddrive, in one direction.
The top corners are tapered, and allow the plug to be installed only one way.

The 40-pin connector may be another story!
Looking at the connector itself, observe if there is a square lug on top. (Square plastic protrusion, emanating from the top edge of the rectangular plug)

This square lug lines up with a cutout in the back of the harddrive. It puts the 40-pin connector, in the proper position in the harddrive.
If this square lug is absent, don't fret when you go to re-install.
I will advise you the way to do it properly.

On one side of that flat ribbon cable you will see a faint Red line, or stripe. This Red line corresponds with Number 1 pin in the ribbon cable. Number 1 pin is on the side where the Red line is.

Viewing the back of your harddrive that you're going to install, (It is an IDE harddrive. Also referred to as EIDE, ATA, or PATA), note the pin locations.

All the way to the right are 4 pins. This is where the 4-pin Molex connector plugs into.
To the immediate Left are the Jumper pins.

To the Left of the Jumper pins are the 40, (39 actually), pins where the flat ribbon cable plugs into.

Number 1 pin goes towards the power connection.
The Red stripe on the flat ribbon cable, will be facing the 4-pin power connection on the harddrive.
