Bezerk Synaptics Touchpad

Response to my synaptics touchpad on return of my Pavilion zd7010us laptop (from the manufacturer--HP-- for repairs is completely abnormal and unreliable. The touchpad surface feels as if it has been waxed or oiled; and the response to my touch is almost nil at times, and overly extreme at others. Wiped the surface with isopropanol, to see if that would help, and tried upgrading the driver, on the chance that it might've become corrupt. The problem is progressively worsening; and, having originally gone 7 weeks without my laptop (and oh, the factory tech wiped my hard drive), I don't want to resubmit my laptop to develop yet another problem. Is there a way to troubleshoot this problem on my own(I'm fairly handy with the laptop usually, though I would require a disassembly manual for this one, I think--is there a download link for that)?

Oh, I did also adjust the settings in windows xp and also in the synaptics program, to minimal improvement.

Appreciate any help you can give me on this issue.

Oops--wasn't familiar with the posting procedure, and missed the button, as it was out of view.

Thanks Tom, you pretty much summed up my own feelings on the matter; however, I neglected to mention that this "repair" involved replacing the motherboard and fan: does that change your opinion any? Are there any connectors or shielding, etc., that I should check? I also tried removing all power and holding the power button, also to no avail.

BTW, having that link for the manuals at hand was extremely impressive: I've searched both google and the HP website on several occasions without finding this page, and I Knew it had to be there!

I have just partially succesfully installed a new powerjack on an HP Ze4145 notebook and and only had 2 2x6 screws left over. When I got the computer, it was dead and I had no knowledge about what was wrong with it. I replaced the loose jack as my first step and everything works except the touchpad. I have tried reinserting the ribbon cable many times and I am almost sure that that is where the trouble lies. I am guessing that you pull up on the white lock and insert the ribbon. Hard to do! Any tips outthere?

    Charles,
The motherboard could indeed be the problem, since the touch pad sends the signal through the motherboard, is processed and sent to the display. It wouldn't hurt checking the ribbon cable to see if it is tight in the socket. Sorry to say that the motherboard could be refurbished and resulted in the problem.

How to unlock touch pad of hp probook 4420s

I using Synaptics.......Go to Start, Control Panel, Mouse. Select Device Settings and then Settings. All required options will be there. If no Synaptics then go to the HP web and enter your model of computer and OS , then to software and driver downloads. There you will find the software and drivers required to give full functionality of the touchpad features. If not found there go to Synaptics web site and look for drivers and utilities for your OS version.

Have you checked the settings of your synaptics? Usually there's an Icon on the taskbar for synaptics you can right click it and check if "disable touchpad if usb pointing device is present" is checked, if so uncheck it then your touch pad should work again.
Here's a link for a step by step instruction though this is for windows xp but steps are the same. Hope this works for you:

How to unlock the pad from an up pavilion dm4-1165dx notebook?

Turning the TouchPad on and off

The TouchPad is turned on at the factory. When the TouchPad zone is active, the light is off.
To turn the TouchPad on and off, quickly double-tap the TouchPad off indicator.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

I'll move the cursor to one spot on the desktop and it will move itself to another....windows 7

You mean, the cursor is erratic and moving all around here and there?

Decrease the Touchpad Sensitivity...

I see that your Laptop was shipped with Windows Vista and it seems you are using a Retail version of Windows 7. Specially, HP/Compaq Laptops is designed for Retail versions and you can face some device/driver functionality issues. But, you can still try the followings.

As per my knowledge, your Laptop has the Synaptics Toucpad.

To Change the Sensitivity of the Touchpad:
1. Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize > Mouse Pointers . The Mouse Properties settings window will open.

2. Select the Device Settings tab. Select the Synaptics TouchPad device and click Settings. In the Properties for Synaptics TouchPad window, expand the Sensitivity topic.
3. Select the PalmCheck option to adjust the sensitivity (decrease it) of the touchpad to avoid erratic cursor movement caused by accidental touching of the pad during normal typing.

If the Device Setting tab is missing.....

1. Click Start, in the Start search field type Msconfig and press enter.

"System Configuration Utility" box will pop up on the screen.

2. Click the Startup tab.
3. Search for "Syntpenh" entry and select the checkbox beside it.
5. Click OK. Restart the computer. Perform above step.

If you are still not able to perform the steps, update the driver from following link.

Synaptics TouchPad Driver: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44501-45000/sp44969.exe

Restart the Notebook and check for the problem. It should be resolved now.
