Hi I have a singer 717, and am looking for the adjustments for the two gears on the bobbin pickup. The old ones striped and were replaced but the bottom stich will zig-zap on the straight stich, any help? thanks, jim

If you are threading the machine correctly, the perhaps the bobbin and needle timing may be off. If you open and look at bobbin case; there is a hook. As you make the needle go up and down you can see if it is aligned or not. You can adjust the timing arm (screw) that allows the needle to go up and down to adjust the timing. It is located behind the face plate (left side of your sewing machine that opens). This link may show you what you are looking for. http://www.wikihow.com/Adjust-Sewing-Machine-Timing
try using a washable stablizer or interfacing. if that doesn't help then it's possible that a gear or cam may be worn enough to cause the machine zig zag not to work properly
There is a screw on the bobbin case which you turn clockwise to tighten but on a quarter of a turn at a time then test sew, make sure the bobbin turns antil clockwise in the bobbin case.
A bent needle will hit the metal. If it continues you will need to adjust the needle carrier. hopefully that isn't bent, but if so I don't believe that the replacement of it will be too costly.
I think if you watch the hook as you turn the wheel you will see that it is not moving. If it's not moving it can't pick up the thread or sew or wind the bobbin. If you really like this machine you can take it to a technician who is going to tell you you have a broken gear.Always have them replaced in pairs. On this machine there are 2 gears( 1 Pair) on the left and 2 gears( 1 Pair) on the right. If the machine is making buzzing noises, replace the machine instead of the gears. Singer makes a nice machine which sells for around $300 which will do more than the one you have and it is easier to use. Look at Model 7467. I sell quite a few of these and they don't give me or my customers problems. sewman7
If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.
