Check your sound setting - volume out - if mic on turn it off - (gets turned on for testing).
Go to sound settings in Control Panel and check sound card setting for correct sound card output.
ALSO - check that MIC is plugged into MIC and NOT Speaker Out - common error.

windows, what windows? you posted DELL to HP ? why?
dell is not hp, (like chevy is not ford)
record,
well that means the mic is bad.
buy and 3.5mm phone jack microphone of quality (vast made)
plug it in and use that,
the internal mics are junk and or most times full of junk.
dust, dirt, grime ,bugs, spilled drinks, all kill tiny MIC's easy.

im moving you to DELL.

My dell inspiron e1705 will power on for tenmin beeps then freeze

Sounds like it's a motherboard or processor issue. Why, well when you said it's slow and freezes, sounds like either the motherboard or processor (I've had this issue with both) and as a long shot it could be a hard drive dieing.. (stops spinning intermittently)
