My father received the

My father received the "replace ink cartridge" message on his Epson NX400. He replaced the black cartridge and now it says to replace "cartridges" (s). He didn't replace anymore because he didn't have extra color cartridges. How likely is it that they would all run out at once? It isn't acknowledging them. He's pressed the OK to proceed and tried turning it off and even the set up button.
So far there has been no progress made. Do you have any suggestions?

Can it work with one of the colored cartridges empty even if the cartridge itself is in the printer?

(he just told me there is a blue light on in the upper left corner of the screen).
