Yes it seems that the battery is weak and it is time to replace . So check the charging voltage on the base phone terminal and if this is low then the charging circuit must be checked. It is important to clean the terminals on the base and handset to allow full flow of charging current.
Please check the link for the battery;
typical fault is bad or no connection between charging terminals and hand set charging terminals...try to clean them using emery cloth or fine sand paper....sometimes even though the contacts look clean they still have bad connections because of an oxide layer that builds up....that oxide layer can easily be taken off with a light sanding......if that doesn't work, then have your hand set checked for internal open solder lines or regulator circuitry faults that regulates power feed to the battery to monitor charging status...
* CHECK YOUR AC OUTLET WITH NO LOOSE CONNECTIONS.(remove multi adapters mostly caused problems)
* FULLY RECHARGE THE BATTERIES.
* CLEAN DE BATTERY CONTACTS IN & OUTSIDE THE HANDSET & THE BASE UNIT.
* IS THE BATTERIES DON'T GET CHARGED FULLY IN OVER NIGHT.PLEASE REPLACE THOSE.
* REPLACE WITH ONLY RECOMMENDED RECHARGEABLE BATT"S.
* PLACE THE BASE UNIT AT CENTRALIZED AREA FOR THE MAXIMUM HANDSET RADIATION.
* KEEP THE BASE UNIT AT SAME FLOOR.
As long as you can jiggle the battery cable and it helps, you have identified a problem in that area. The solution would be if you have side mounts use a small wire bush or old throw away tooth brush with about a cup of water mixed with a table spoon or so of baking soda, and clean all the corrosion off the terminal connectors.( The part that connects to the battery ) If post, clean the inside of the post connector by using a battery terminal cleaning tool sold at the parts store for a couple of dollars. As long as your terminals are dirty or lose the alternator cannot get the electrical charge to the battery and your battery will go dead and or get very Durr! Ruhh! low. Oh yea after it gets dark and you turn your lights on with the battery terminals lose or corroded to the point they don't let the alternator charge your battery, the battery will use all the stored voltage very quickly and the lights will get dim and when you stop your engine will turn off and probably want start back up with out a boost from a good sumaritan.even though the battery and the alternator are like new.
Have the batteries been changed since the system was purchased... 4 years is a fairly good usage for batteries in that type of use. Good news you should have no trouble buying replacement batteries... even walmart has them. Open the back of one of the phones... the battery has a small plug.. pull that out and you will see the part number... about 25 dollars each battery pack... cheaper if you are in the states. One note tho... when you replace the battery pack you need to charge it for at least 12 hours prior to the first usage 24 hours even better.
Yes even if the Battery-low indicator does not light. There may not be enough current left in the battery. it may depend on how much talk time is expended after each full charge. For a phone of this vintage I would get a new battery or upgrade to a 5.8 GHZ phone. Check first to see if the charging light comes on steady when the handset is on the base and no tarnish or debris is on the battery charging terminals on both the handset and the base unit. Clean them with a soft cloth to make sure.
Check the handset battery -- if there is a slight "bulge" on one side (ie: not COMPLETELY flat) then the problem is with the battery. I had that problem and had to order a new one. That said, I just installed the new battery, and while it now charges, the handset won't connect to the base unit. The base unit works (tried the speakerphone), but there is not connection between base and handset.
