Question about Toshiba 50HX70 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Service Mode I am just about ready to change my ic's for convergence problems. I heard that once I have changed them that I will need to enter service mode and adjust things from there. I have this television second hand so I have no idea how to enter service mode on it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was hoping to find a way to enter service mode without purchasing the manual.

JustinMan, if you use original IC`s (not the el-cheapo chinese copies) the odds are good you will need no or minor adjustments which don`t require the need to go into service mode which you really shouldn`t go into unless your experienced with tv repair, you should be able to order the serv. manual here, it will give you the parts list and set-up procedure, good luck, BMW Rider

Justin, I`ve been a tv tech for 29 years and I would NEVER go into the service menu and start changing things without the service manual, you can REALLY screw up your set doing that, which will of course cost YOU more money when a tech comes out to get it right again, do yourself a big favor and either purchase the sm or just call a tech, trust me it will save you lots of grief and aggravation, BMW Rider

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Try resoldering the pins on the ICs first. If that fails to resolve the problem, change the IC responsible for RED. You should be able to determine that from the service manual. In that area you should also see either fuses or low valued resistors that feed the STKs. Check those as well.

Let me know if you need further info.

50H13 Red Convergence Problem

I do wish people like troylove11 would stop giving advice on things they obviously know very little about. The Toshiba projection sets never have loose connections on the convergence IC's, and there are never bad resistors in those sets. There is no separate convergence board and there are no adjustments on any boards. The convergence adjustments are done electronically, through the remote in the service mode. Also, moving or bumping a projection set cannot cause a solder joint to crack loose. Your set has 2 large convergence IC's and one of them has burned out. This is very common in projection sets. Do not attempt to enter the service mode to make adjustments, because you will only be messing up the correct settings and when the new IC is installed, the colors will still be way out of alignment. Replacing a convergence IC is a very simple thing for an experienced tech, and it is well worth getting the set fixed. If your set uses the STK392-010 IC's, it is probably a good idea to go ahead and replace both IC's with the newer, upgraded STK392-150 IC's. If you have not changed the convergence settings, the picture will return to normal once the IC is replaced and very little realignment will be necessary. When I do a housecall for a set like that it takes about an hour and a half and I charge $150, but shops in your area will vary so ask around.

Convergence problem

Well you need to get into your tv's service menu and service convergence mode. It's different for every tv. It means entering a code on the remote that opens up a secret menu for changing tv settings. Go to and buy the service manual for your set, you'll be glad you did.

Service mode for convergence

You enter the service menu by using the remote. Press DISPLAY, 5, VOL+, POWER in rapid succession. Once the screen appears, you should notice green letters and numbers at the top of the screen. Your remote acts as a navigation tool to allow you to select and change values. Keys 1 and 4 change the Item, keys 2 and 5 change the Category, and keys 3 and 6 change the Value. MUTE enters the write function, and ENTER executes it. Power exits the service menu. Keep in mind that while in the convergence mode, the keys have different functions, which we'll get to in due time. The service manual will also have this information.

Factory settings

I have heard of a reset in the factory 2 position of the service menu. Click the button behind the little hole in the front panel a second time and it goes into 2nd service mode.

I have never used that mode, I only use the first sm, but have heard that you can reset your conv points that way. You'll still have a lot of work to do afterwards, of course.

Once the STK ICs have been changed out/replaced when defective, the conv should still be roughly where it was before and only need trimming. Only once has a massive shift happened when I have done this, which needed massive corrections. So it does happen, but only very rarely.

I offer phone consultation, if you wish, to get it really good in there.

Toshiba 42H82 convergence problem

Replace STK convergence IC's w/OEM or better parts.Senior tech soldering ability needed. Ex==Steel jumper wires feeding b+ to conv. IC's need resolder to prevent call-back.Also, best re-alignment done in service mode==consult service literature.
