Loose earphone Jack on sony NW s705f

Can

Sony Nw-s705f, 2 gig mp3 player:

I learned the hard way that a dangling headphone wire from player to my head snags on doorway strikeplates here at my company. After three of four hard tugs my headphone jack receptacle tore partially loose of the player's circuit board.

I can solder it back into place if I can get the player opened up but so far I can't figure out how. Specifically, does anyone have advice on how to pry this player open? I don't see screws. It makes me think it was assembled clamshell style and glued to the chasis.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

This is a defect that Sony has addressed:

    http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item....

These things should be able to handle more than a few tugs to the socket. After about five months of using mine normally (workouts, at the office laying on my desk, etc), the headphone jack became all loose, making the audio blink in and out with static. I thought I was the only one, but it turns out my boyfriend's AND a friend's did the same thing. Probably not a coincidence! And it would do the same thing with two different pairs of headphones.

Just have yours replaced at Sony's expense.

Hiya,

If you remove the "hold" switch from the back of the unit, you'll discover a screw. Remove the screw and gently life the metal off cover off, it's might appear stuck but this is ok, it's held in place with a bit of double sided tape. Once inside there are two more screws... and to remove the PCB, there's another few screws.. Have fun!

However, I'm thinking when you say loose, are you referring to the physical socket? Because inside the player the socket isn't mounted directly to the PCB, instead it's mounted to a super thin plastic with copper-like contacts which in attaches to the main-board. The actual socket is designed to be slightly loose turns this puts less stress on the PCB and it's held in place buy the track controller/collar...

My advice, if it works don't dismantle it..

This is a known issue that Sony owned up to. I had this problem with mine and I sent it on to Sony. They just sent it back fixed free of charge, but it did cost me some time and a written complaint.

See this post for some clues:

XKupu,

Thanks for the info. I had this problem starting today and I've created a service order for Sony to fix it for free.

Guest,

There is an alternative to SonicStage...Google "voidmp3"

My player was turning itself off and the problem got so bad that the player became unusable. I followed ultraneo's directions and took the back cover off and discovered a little bit of white corrosion next to the reset button just below the reset hole in the cover, I scraped it off with a screw driver and the player started working normal again. now if there was only an alternative to sonic stage this player would be great. I cant understand why sony would put a hole in the player cover with out extending the plastic cover that is behind the metal cover, this is clearly a design flaw. I am going to put some tape over the hole and hope the problem doesn't come back

I am only receiving sound out of one ear from my mp3

Open up the player and look at the headphone jack, there may be a loose conneciton that needs to be re-soldered in or the jack itself is faulty and will need to be replaced. You may be able to get one from etech.com
