I have the exact same problem.  I have an HTS3544 home theatre system and a 61 inch Samsung DLP HDTV.  could be an interface problem between samsung and phillips???

I have the same problem with certain DVDs. I get the surrond sound effects, but no speech. When I switch to stereo, the sound is fine. The DVD being played has DTS and/or Dolby sound. I think this is a problem with the Philips unit and will probably return it. I cannot find any setting that will fix the problem with surround sound for the affected DVDs.

First, press the SURR button to see if you can get sound out of more than 2 speakers, then:
There are a few possibilities.
1)You can connect a red and white AV cable (or the red and white portion of a red, white and yellow cable) from the TV Audio OUTPUT to the "Audio In/TV" portion of the HTS (NOTE: Many TV's do not have an Audio OUTPUT).
2)You can connect a red and white AV cable (or the red and white portion of a red, white and yellow cable) from the Audio OUTPUT of your cable or satellite box to the "Audio In/TV" portion of the HTS.
Note: Using a red and white cable may not give you sound on all 5 speakers.
3)Get a digital audio or SPDIF cable and run it from the TV, Cable or Satellite Box's Digital Audio OUT to the "DIGITAL IN" of the HTS. This will give you the best sound quality. When using this (or any of the other) type of connection, press SURR until you get sound from all 5 speakers.
Also, the manual can be obtained from www.usasupport.philips.com

SURROND SOUND

You can get the manual here, for free: link.
(Warning, it's a PDF, but it's the right one)

That should help you get into surround sound mode for all of your devices, as well.

I had the same thing just happen and I used the following instructions from the Vizio Website for "humming sound" on tv and it worked. My sound is now working!!!!

1- Power off TV

2- Unplug TV from outlet

3- Press and hold in the power button on the TV for 30 seconds (while it is unplugged from the wall)

4- Release the power button

5- Plug in the TV into a different outlet

6- Power the TV back on.

Reset the TV settings.

This TV ONLY transfer audio OUT to a ANALOG SYSTEM THRU AND ANALOG SIGNAL. That is, TV will play sound fine in your surround system but any digital (HDMI) wont sound.
