SOURCE: Date and time reset at power-on
The other reviewer is close but not completely correct. For the Canon A510 The "date battery" is accessible under a small tab on the side of the camera near where you plug in the communication cable. (the access point is not inside the main battery compartment, nor is camera disassembly required). CR1220 is the correct battery for time/date retention. The instructions for how to do this are in the A510 manual, if your manual is the same issue as mine, you will find the instructions on pages 137-138. This is something you can do yourself, no need to take it to a repair shop.

Open up the battery door of your camera. There's a little slide drawer labeled CR1220. Use your fingernail or small screwdriver to pry and slide it open. This little button battery runs your camera's clock. Remove and reinstall it to see if that fixes it. If not, time to buy another battery. The CR1220 battery is very common, inexpensive ($2 to 3), and available at most stores (try your local drugstore). Take the old battery with you to the store to make sure you buy the right one.

There are two batteries in the camera. One is the big one you charge and the other is a little coin type battery. This coin battery maintains your settings and when it goes your camera forgets things. Same setup on computers and a lot of other electronics. In your camera the battery is a CR1220 worth about $1-$2. It should last about 3-5 years but you never know.
The battery is in a little holder on the left hand side of the camera. Its under the same cover as the usb connector and power plug in. You should be able to pop out the battery holder fairly easily. This is one of those things that if you take the camera to a battery store they will probably do it for you if they aren't busy. If you look at page 137 of your manual you will find the instructions for doing it yourself.
