Convert CAD (DWG) to Visio Drawings

We get CAD floor plans from our customers (building floor plans) and we would like to convert to Visio so we can modify for our needs. We really don't need full blown CAD or CAD lite functionality -- Visio serves our purposes just fine. However, we are having bear of a time converting the CAD floor plans to Visio. MS Help says it can be done, but we can't figure it out. Is that something you do?

Re: Convert CAD (DWG) to Visio Drawings

You can import graphics files of different formats to start a new Visio drawing by using the Open command on the File menu.
The following graphics file formats are supported:

  • AutoCAD Drawing File Format (.dwg, .dxf)
  • Compressed Enhanced Metafile (.emz)
  • Enhanced Metafile (.emf)
  • Graphics Interchange Format (.gif)
  • JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg)
  • Portable Network Graphics (.png)
  • Scalable Vector Graphics Drawing (.svg, .svgz)
  • Tag Image File Format (.tif, .tiff)
  • Windows Bitmap (.bmp, .dib)
  • Windows Metafile (.wmf)
Note File formats may vary slightly between language versions. You may not get exactly the same results if you import files created in different language versions.
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Files of type box, click the file format of the file you want to import.
If you don't see the file format listed, Visio doesn't have a file filter for that format. Try saving the document in a format Visio can open.

.dwg file corrupt?

Different solutions you may find out here:- - a lot of different opinions might be your saving.

BAK files are very important, explanation below:
Consider what AutoCAD does during a QSAVE (assuming "create BAK" is enabled)
1. It writes the contents of the editor to a temp file.
2. It renames the current drawing from .DWG to .BAK
3. It renames the temp file to the correct file name with a .DWG extension.

I don't see how you have had problems with BAK files since it's simply a copy of your last save. In fact, if you QSAVE twice in a row, then your BAK = the DWG.

Need to email invoice to a customer but cant find the option to do it

Firstly insert the invoice into a word file and then try it to convert in PDF file, so that no one can edit it. Doc to PDF converters are found in net. So many softwares are there to convert it. After conversion done, attach the file and send it to the desired email ID.

Please give me detail steps involved if you were able to successfully use this mehod to convert files....

Say you got tons of Excel sheets, PowerPoint presentations and Word documents on your computer that were written in Office XP or 2003. How do you convert all these files to the new Office 2007 format. One option is that you open all of them in the associated Office program and manually save them in the newer (docx, xlsx or pptx) format. Or follow these steps and convert all documents in one go.
Step 1: Download Migration Manager kit and extract it into a new folder – say: c:\office.
Step 2: Download and install the Office Pack – this step is required even if you have Microsoft Office 2007 already installed on your computer.
Step 3: Assuming that you extracted the Office Manager files in c:\office directory, go c:\office\tools, open ofc.ini using notepad and add the following line.
This refers to the folder location that holds your office files. I am pointing this to my Documents folder but it could be different on your machine.
Step 4: Open command prompt and go to c:\office\tools. There you’ll see a utility called ofc.exe – this is the Office File Converter that will convert all old Office files to the new 2007 Office document format in bulk. Run.
Immediately all old Office files in that folder (and sub-folders) will get converted to the new format and are saved in a new folder.
This utility works with Word (doc to docx), Access databases, PowerPoint (ppt to pptx), Visio diagrams, Excel (xls to xlsx) and Microsoft Project files. The conversion may however fail for password protected documents.

Have an expired version of MS Visio 2007 Pro Trial - cannot remove other than formatting drive - tried downloading a new trial and keeps asking to convert - other than formatting HDD is there a workaround?

Try to remove it from add and remove programs. If that does not work do this.
Go to start, run and type in regedit....Be very careful while doing this...Click edit find and type in the name Visio and delete it. Hit F3 and when it finds the name again delete it. Make sure you only delete that name. Go all the way and delete that name intill it says it is finished searching the registry. Then search the computer for the name and delete it. I promise it will be gone....Darren
