I am having the same problem with my Ipod nano. Everytime I plug the ipod into the USB, my computer is telling me this

'USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned & Windows does not recognise it'

I am running Windows Vista and we purchased the Ipod about 2 weeks ago.

Any help would be appreciated. Also the 'Device Manager' only states 'Unknown Device', it does not even say 'Ipod'....:(.

    Thanks.

I had a similar problem. I opened Itunes and then connected the Ipod and Itunes recognized it. The next time I connected the Ipod the computer recognized it.

I had a very similar problem with a USB camcroder, drove me crazy! This sounds like a USB deviceIpod doesnt connect to my pc/i cant download - 4.gif not being recognized, this issue is rather uncommon with XP, it's not the player or device, unless the device is not working proplerly. 9 out of 10 times it's system device manager.

(Solution)
With the device plugged into the USB go to control panel and click on system and navigate to your device manager hardware>device manager, scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, there should be either an X or an exclamation mark indicating the device/driver is not loaded properly, right click on that line and chose uninstall driver, reboot then plug the device in, if it asks for a driver then put in the CD and let the driver install it. If this still does not work, then repeat the above but instead of choosing uninstall when you right click choose "update driver" and when it asks for a location to the driver, point it to the driver on the CD.

Hope this helps

My ipod touch 4 wont work! it shows the # symbols (usb, arrow, itunes), and it doesnt do anything else! pleaseeeee help! Thanks.

You must have bought a new iPod!
The screen is simply telling you to connect your iPod to your computer. (You should have iTunes already installed, if not you can download it, and install it for free from the Apple website).
Once it is connected, iTunes will pop up, and the rest of the set up will be simple!

How to use an ipod shuffle charge

Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the following iPod models back to their factory settings when iTunes is unable to do so. The process completely erases all music and data and reinstalls the iPod software version listed below:
  • iPod shuffle (1st generation) - iPod Software version 1.1.5
  • iPod shuffle (2nd generation) - iPod Software version 1.0.4
download here
http://support.apple.com/downloads/iPod_Reset_Utility_1_0_4_for_Windows
then install..
follow these instructions..
Using iPod Reset Utility
  1. Quit all running applications on your computer.
  2. Open iPod Reset Utility.
  3. Connect iPod to a USB port on your computer. Do not connect iPod to a USB port on your keyboard, or other non-powered USB hub.
  4. Click the Reset button.
  5. If prompted, enter an administrator name and password. Notice: Do not disconnect iPod during the reset process.
  6. When complete, quit iPod Reset Utility and open iTunes to load music onto iPod.

Ipod isnt detected.

For it to recognize, maybe try:
1: go to control panel
2:add hardware
3:connect your hardware device and click "yes i have connected the hardware"
4:scroll down and select install new hardware device
5:select install hardware that i manually select from a list
6:scroll down to windows portable devices
7:and choose MTP device
this should make it so your ipod is now recognized by the computer

Downlaod-error messege when attempting to reset iPod classis

If when you have a new ipod and you connect it to a computer, if the first computer you connect it to is a mac, then that is the only type of pc it will work with after that. If you want it to connect it to a windows, you will have to restore it which will allow it to work with windows software. For some reason unknown, mac and windows have different loading software for the ipod and has to be re-installed with a restore before it can work with a different operating system. When it restores on your computer, check to make sure it has a strong internet connection. You should be able to restore after that.
