Question about Nikon N55 35mm SLR Camera

1 Answer

My camera won't do anything but flash the Err message

I just got a Nikon N55 for Christmas. I think my mom ordered it off the internet. She said it was new not used. I opened it and tried to turn it on and nothing happened. I checked the batteries and what's weird is it came with batteries in it so I thought i'd change them. Once I did that and tried to load the film the camera wouldn't do anything but blink the Err message. It dosen't rewind the film or anything. Help please. I haven't been able to use my new camera yet!

Make sure the lens you are using on the camera is set to the minimum aperture setting. i.e. f22,f32 (highest f stop number)

My N55 won't let me depress the shutter (to take the shot) when it's on automatic setting. I depress once (half-way) for autofocusing--which seems to work fine. No error message. But then, the N55...

Could be your lens is not communication with the body. If the lens is not telling the camera that the AF has locked on an object then it won't allow the camera to fire. Make sure that the camera is indeed locking the AF on the object. If there isn't enough contrast (for example a plain wall) then it wont be able to lock onto it. This would usually explain why it works on manual but not on auto (I assume you mean the focus setting and not the camera's modes). If you're still having issues I recommend you contact a nearby Nikon authorized service center for assistance and possible repairs. Hope this helps!

Can't see anything when i look thryu the lens, when I click a ERR signal comes on...just changed the batteries

It sounds as if your mirror is stuck in the upper position. It could be a jam in the mirror mechanism or alternately your shutter has failed and the mirror wont return because of that.
You could have it repaired, but to be honest I do not believe that it would be worth it. You can pick up a good used N90s on eBay for under $70, which is a superb replacement for an N55, and built much better. All your lenses will work on an N90s (and more).

My Nikon F55 shows 'Err' when i turn it on. The camera is inactive since. Can anyone help me understand and fix this problem ?

Its quite likely that the film transport motor is dead or at least the camera electronics thinks so. I assume you already tried new batteries. It sounds like a trip to repair shop is in order.

You might also be able to get another F55 body on Ebay to use as a source of parts since these are no longer in production.

No i am looking for a pdf n55 user guide

You can find old camera user guides on this guys website but I don't think he has one for Nikon N55. I believe there is one for N50 but I am not sure how much this will help you. Good luck.

Nikon N55 camera locks up

The F-- indicates that the camera is not communicating with the lens. There are several reasons for this.

The lens is not capable of communicating. If it's an old lens, without the electrical contacts, then you'll have to set the camera to Manual (M) mode in order to use this lens.

If the lens has an aperture ring, set it to the smallest aperture (biggest F/number) and lock it (if it has a lock).

If the lens has no aperture ring, then the contacts may be dirty. Remove lens, clean contacts on back of the lens and in the mount on the body, then reattach lens.

If that doesn't do it, then either the camera and/or the lens may require service.

Nikon n55 film camera

You must have your lens set to the minimum aperture setting for this camera to function. I.E. f22,f32. The aperture ring moves a small tab on the outside of the mount ring when in that position.

Fee to error

Remove the batteries for 5 or 10 minutes. Remove the lens from the body and replace it. Make sure the lens is on f22 before you put the batteries back in and turn on the camera. If this doesn't solve it, try rewinding the film you have in the camera and try a new roll. The other thing to check if none of the above works is to remove the lens and check the small tab just on the outside of the mount ring at about 7:00. The tab is spring loaded and you should be able to push it with your finger and it will snap back. If it doesn't, the tab plate will need repaired or replaced

Flashing Err and E/Error Problem

You might want to check the position of the aperture ring on the lens. If it is not set at the highest number, ( IE smallest aperture, f22,f32 ), then the camera will display that error message
