I can't unlock my maps

I down loaded the americas recreational basemap 4.0 and when I turn on my gps it saya can't unlock map hit enter

    I purchased my Nuvi 350 with City Navigator NT Europe v8 loaded on it. A few months ago, I requested map updates from garmin and I received v9 update DVD for my City Navigator, but I never got the unlock code. Yesterday I loaded the v9 DVD on my PC and my Nuvi, but they are both locked and my Nuvi is now worthless. When I turn on the Nuvi it say "can't unlock maps", and then it contines with the start up. How do I unlock the maps? or if possible can I get v8 to work again?

    Yes, I got the same problem.. also, when I turned it on, I got always as the first screen, a pin number screen to be typed.... I have no idea what it is this initial PIN number.... anyone knows?

    i have the same problem altho i didnt download any maps. Its still the same SD card all i did was take it out put it in my laptop have a little look then put it back in and it says one or more maps locked. ???doesnt offer PIN or anythin??

Buy your map updates from Garmin, and Garmin alone.... then you can call on their excellent full customer support. They even supply you with an unlock code when you purchase maps direct from them as part of the deal. (these numbers will be recorded with Garmin, so contact them if you lost yours).
If you download maps from 'shady' sites, you get shady programs too.
Some maps downloaded have been found containing trojans to send details of your linked bluetooth products (phone details, computer details)

When your unit says that it cannot unlock the maps, it's because these were not purchased from a Garmin dealer, they were probably downloaded from the internet. Garmin has a unlock procedure which they will help you with if your unit is registered with them.

For oldeman2002: if your son set the PIN number on the unit, and you can't return to the unit to the security location where the unit was set, send the GPS in to Garmin with proof of purchase and they will unlock it for you.

The base map will just give you major highways. You are missing the gmapprom.img file which supplies all city streets. The sum file is not used and is only a checksum file to insure that the basemap was downloaded without errors. The map file, depending on year can be anywhere from 1 to 2GB in size and too large to be sent by email. In addition, you will need an unlock code file to activate the map on your unit. Garmin Nuvi 200 Maps Disappeared

I wanted to add maps to my 250W. I found the maps I wanted on a Torrent. However, many searches around various forums never revealed how to install these. Found the following through reading and experimentation.

1. Downoaded map image file GMAPSUPP.IMG. Download also gave me "Use code XXX when generating unlock code for maps"
2. Downloaded Garmin Unlock Generator 1.3 by JetMouse
3. Looked on my GPS to find the UnitID
4. Entered the UnitID into Garmin Unlock Generator. Ignore the GM XT device unlock code and the top Generate button.
5. Selected Map Product as Custom and entered the code given for the downloaded image file.
6. Hit the bottom create button to generate a 25 digit code.
7. Download Img2Gps and run
8. Click Load Folder to load the image file. Select the tick next to it.
9. Check the Use Unlock Key option and paste the 25 digit code in.
10. Load a blank SD card into your Garmin
11. Connect the Garmin to your PC using a USB cable. You should see two dirves in windows: one is the Garmin and the other is the "Removable Disk" SD card.
12. Create a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card
13. Select Folder/Card in Img2GPS
14. Click "Copy Maps". Select the folder /Garmin on the SD card. You may need to click copy again.
15. Upload will take a while.
16. You should now see a file GMAPSUPP.IMG on the SD card in the /Garmin directory.
17. Create a new text file called GMAPSUPP.UNL in the same directory (make sure it does not have a hidden .txt extension).
18 copy the 25 digit unlock key into this file.
19. Close the file.
20. Disconnect the Garmin.
21. On Startup it should load your original maps and the new ones.

Cannot save waypoint on my magellan triton 200 gps.
Assuming you have installed the latest firmware. When you are on the map screen, just click on the center button and do a create a Waypoint and pick current location.

Or push the MENU button .. choose CREATE a WAYPOINT and when you GPS is on and has locked in on the Satellites . then create the Waypoint.

Or, if this doesn´t work, go to www.magellangps.com, click on "support", click on "legacy products" (left) and click on "eXplorist 210 Europe" (do NOT click on "eXplorist 210 North America")

On this page click under Updates/Upgrades on "version 2.57", and follow the instructions.
You will have to register your GPS, register with a European country, and it will work out fine.

After you have installed the firmware you will have the basemap and some new windows on the GPS. Good luck and enjoy!

Explorist 210 no base map
I solved this problem by gonig to the secret menu by holding the nav + power. I entered the value # 95 in the menu. This will let you format the memory area in the unit then I down loaded the latest firmware update from magellan.com and installed it on the
unit.I had already made a copy of the files on the unit in my hard drive so i copied the files back to my unit so that i did not loose anything important like poi's and geocaches etc...

PS when I did the firmware up date the base map must have been restored.

Loading Topo maps...210 says invalid base map??
To get the base map and to get your unit functioning again:
Install the firmware again:

Or, if this doesn´t work, go to www.magellangps.com, click on"support", click on "legacy products" (left) and click on "eXplorist210 Europe" (do NOT click on "eXplorist 210 North America")

Rename it BASEMAP.MGI
Then copy it in the directory "background maps" in the SD card of your 500, by using a SD card reader/writer.
Insert the SD card in your 500 and connect it to your PC; then turn it on;it will turn on regularly, because the basemap in the card will be detected; turn it to USB file transfer mode, and copy the basemap from the SD card to the directory "background maps" of the 500.

Route calculation error
I was having the same problem and contacted Garmin support.

What I had done was turned off the Basemap that came with the unit. I only had the mapsource map street map on which I had purchased separately.

The technician basically said the unit needed the basemap to "locate itself". Somehow the basemap supports any maps you purchase separately. That seemed odd but once I turned the Basemap back on it calculated the routes and the error message went away.

If you have the Basemap off, try turning it on from the Map Setup - Information window.
