- Well, several hours and gross, painstaking dis- assembly later, I found the problem: the impeller in the main circulation pump had broken free of the drive plate connected to the motor. The scuffing noise I heard was the impeller plate spinning lethargically against the inside of the pump housing. The impeller should have been connected by a series of what I assume to be shear pins - some of which would have been tight fit or heat molded on the other side, and some of them simple loose, locator fit - intended to allow the motor to spin in the event of a dinosaur bone or something lodging in the impeller. Naturally there is no sign of any such foreign body, and the pins looked like they simply gave up, as only some of them are broken - the majority are fine. The pump and everything else are fine. I'm irritated now, because I'm probably going to have to buy an entire pump or worse for the sake of a 90 cent part. Maybe I can epoxy the impeller back on with a couple of the remaining pins.
