Question about Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook
If you are comfortable with opening up your laptop and replacing it then follow the manual that BBJohn sent you. Other wise most places that have A+ Certified Techs can replace it in an hour if they aren't to busy and will normally cost about $50 to $75 depending on the shop's rate.

Answer to new modem not detected:
I'm only guessing here... I would thing that the new modem has a slightly different firmware then the old one and requires driver update.
Try to uninstall the old modem driver and update the driver from Dell's site.

You can replace it if you know exactlly what you are doing, just open the laptop up, and replace it. Be sure not to touch anything else.

I was able to successfully replace the modem with help from fixya participant input. The original factory modem from Dell (conexant d110 mdc v.9x) stopped dialing, I suspect a power surge from lightning however I don't know this for a fact. I did diagnostics on it when I noticed it was not dialing and it appeared everything was ok, the modem was obviously answering queries from diagnostics and log indicated all was ok. I ordered new modem from Dell exactly off the original invoice, new modem arrived (invoice said mdm,56K,int,mdc, 1.5 liteon). Physically exact same size, connections, everything fit easily into place on the swap. After replacement, computer cannot see new modem. Opened back up, disconnected, reconnected, again everything snugged up just right, still no modem apparant. Popped the old modem back in, shows up immediately, queries just fine but no dialing still. What the heck do ya think is going on?
