Scanner/Director problems since installing new ink cartridge

I have had this scanner for a few years and until recently have suffered no problems--not until I put in a new HP tri-color ink cartridge a few weeks ago. Prior to installing this cartridge my printer printed, scanned, and copied just fine. Since then, I've had nothing but problems. At first, it wouldn't copy, print, nor scan after I installed the new ink cartridge--i kept getting error messages such as the printer wasn't communicating with the computer and to make sure it was hooked up properly, which it was. Upon checking with the user manual, I tried to open the Director, and discovered that only two icons showed up instead of the 5 that should have been there. As advised, I uninstalled/reinstalled the all in one software. After that, I was able to copy and print things out, but the scanner wouldn't work--I kept getting the 'check to see if its hooked up properly' message. Director wouldn't open at all---i got a message that said there has been an error. So, once again I uninstalled the all in one software. At that time i also uninstalled my previous HP printer that I had before I got the all in one, which was a HP 3740, as well as the software for my HP Photosmart M305/307 digital camera. I reinstalled the software for my all in one, as well as the camera, and found that Director would try to open, but instead of two icons, now there are none in there at all and I keep getting IE script error messages. The printer once again would copy/print and the scanner didn't work. After looking around trying to figure out what to do next, i discovered that it appeared that the old scanner-(the 3740)-was still on my computer despite me having uninstalled it already. I tried to uninstall it again, and was told to insert the disk, which i did. I was told that this printer was already installed and it would remove it, so i click on OK, and it proceeded to do it's thing. Unfortunately, it didn't get too far when a message popped up that 'a severe error has occured and that the process would now back out'. I thought that perhaps I could reinstall that software, but the only option given is to remove the old software, so that's out. I have tried several times to uninstall/reinstall the all in one software, but i keep getting the same results---it will copy/print, but the scanner will not scan into my computer and Director is blank with no icons in it and gives me various IE script error messages. I know the scanner works because it will calibrate, and it will copy things I place in it to just print out, however, when i try to simply scan something I get told that the scanner is not communicating with the computer and to check to make sure it's hooked up. All I did was install a new ink cartridge and have no idea why that would cause all this grief. I'm at a total loss now as to what to try next---any ideas???

How do i install mt inks


Please follow the steps below on how to install/replace ink cartridges on your model:
  1. Make sure the All-In-One is on.
  2. Lift the scanner unit until the scanner support keeps it open. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the All-In-One is busy.
  3. Grasp the tabs on the cartridge lids, and then lift the lids.
  4. Remove the old cartridges. Store them in an air-tight container or dispose of them.
  5. If you are installing new cartridges, remove the stickers and transparent tape from the bottom of the cartridges.
  6. Insert the new cartridges. Make sure the black print cartridge is secure in the right carrier and the color cartridge is secure in the left carrier, and then snap the lids closed.
  7. Lift the scanner unit and push the scanner support back while lowering the scanner unit until it is completely closed.

Sometimes the ink cartridge carrier won't automatically move to its loading position even when the printer is on and the cover is open. Follow the steps below:


1. Unplug the printer from the power source.

2. With the cover open, hold the solid white strip that connects from the carrier assembly to the ink cartridge carrier and gently slide the cartridge carrier to the center of the printer.

3. Remove the used cartridges.

4. Load the new cartridges. Close the cover.

5. Plug the printer back to the power source.

From the Manual:

1 Make sure the printer is on.

Received an error code 50c on my Dell printer


Regarding the Dell A940 "Error 50c"....the user guide doesn't seem to mention "Error 50c". They do, however, mention a "Cartridge Error" on page 52 of the manual. They claim this means that the printer has detected a short circuit (fuse/resister) in the cartridge. As you may or may not have noticed in the manual, this is what they recommend doing about it:

1) Press Power to turn the printer off.

2) Lift the printer cover/lid (scanner unit) until the scanner support holds it open.

3) Turn the printer on.
The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.

4) Remove the color ink cartridge.

5) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.
If the error message displays again, replace the black cartridge with a new black cartridge.

If the error message does not display, repeat steps 1–3 and then go to step 6.

Dell A940 prints black but doesn't print in color. I installed a new color cartrige and the 50c error went away, but still doesn't print in color...

I don't know how to change the ink bought this printer from a guy at work no manual


Lift the scanner cover from the right-hand side of the MFC until
it locks securely into the open position.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty, for example Black, the
LCD shows Ink Empty Black and Cover is Open.

Pull the ink cartridge hook toward you and remove the ink
cartridge for the color shown on the LCD.

Open the new ink cartridge bag for the color shown on the LCD,
and then take out the ink cartridge.

Remove the cartridge covers.

Each color has its own correct position. Keep the ink cartridge
in an upright position when you insert it into slot. Press down on
the ink cartridge until the hook snaps over it.

Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the
scanner cover support down and close the scanner cover.

If you replaced an ink cartridge while Near Empty was
displayed on the LCD, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was
a brand new one. Example: Did You Change Blck? 1.Yes
2.No. For each new cartridge you installed, press 1 on the dial
pad to automatically reset the ink dot counter for that color. If the
ink cartridge you installed is not a brand new one, please be
sure to select 2.

If you wait until Ink Empty message is displayed on the LCD,
the MFC will automatically reset the ink dot counter.

If the Install message is on the display after you have
installed ink cartridges, check that the ink cartridges are
installed properly.

I never had a problem using the HP Director button to scan until just recently when I get no action when clicking on thr desktop button.. I run windows XP Number Q3190A listed on the bottom of the scanner.


My Director shortcut button on the desktop did the same thing a few years ago. There is a patch to download on the HP website to fix it. Not sure of the number of the patch, but if you search , you should be able to find it!

I have other problems with mine, no power. Hp shows no power cord replacement because it is discontinued model now. I think it's time to buy a Canon scanner!!!
