Question about Philips CDR775 2-Disc CD Recorder

1 Answer

Optical error I am having problems recording on this cd recorder. Brand new blank cdr's for digital audio are giving me optical errors during the initialization process when I insert a disc for recording. Once in a great while I will get one to record and it will seem to work fine for a while then it will stop recording and "update" while in the middle of a song. Then I hear a scratching noise and then it says "optical error". I have tried several different brands of blank cdr's for digital audio with the same result. Last night I was able to record one straight through but that is rare. One bizarre note is that I have no problem recording on the only cd re-writable disc (for music only) that I have. I can record on it and erase it and it and then record something else and it does not give me this problem. These discs must be discontinued because I can no longer find any rewritable cdr's for audio anywhere! This cd recorder is almost 10 years old and I have never had a problem until now. Any cd will play fine on both drives, I am just having a problem recording on the record drive. It either will not initialize, or it will and then in the midst of recording it quits with an optical error. I cant count the blanks I have thrown away due to this. Can anyone help me?? Thanks - Glen

Your laser is failing. There is a test mode sequence you can try to re-calibrate it but to be honest it's the beginning of the end. I can supply replacement laser assemblies depending on where you are in the world or I can email you the service manual so you can try adjusting it yourself. Email me via ebay - fluffcat1

Audio cdrw's are still freely available in the UK.

My cd recorder wont read blank cds help me please

Do as it asks, insert blank CD-Audio or CD-Music media.

Discs for recording
For recording, make sure to use special audio discs only.
These discs are marked with “Digital Audio” and the logos shown below.
There are two different types of audio discs for the use on this CD recorder:
– CD-Audio Recordable (CDR) discs
These discs can be recorded on once and
play in all standard CD players and CD
recorders, when they are finalized.
– CD-Audio ReWritable (CDRW) discs
These discs can be recorded on, erased and
re-recorded many times and play in CDRW
compatible CD players and CD recorders,
when they are finalized.
– All Philips CD players and CD recorders
with the sticker shown here are CDRW
compatible.
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of Philips audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only.
Note: Do not use a computer CDR or CDRW as recording will not work!

Go here and download the manual. You'll need it.

Disc reading

How confident are you at opening it up? And where are you? If it can get table of contents info it could be gummed up grease on the laser sled.

Cdr s1000 help

Hi Rick

The unit has stopped reading discs. I suggest taking the lid off and cleaning the laser lens with a cotton bud with a little Windex , then give it a gentle polish to be sure no residue smearing is left. If that does not fix it, check to see what actually happens when you load a disc. Does the transport fully engage and clamp the disc correct into the chucking assembly. Let me know how you got on:)

Graeme

Won't record

I've just spoken to a friend who also has one of these older Philips recorders & he has the same problem.

As per my previous post, he fixed his problem by locating old stocks of blanks. New audio discs seem to have been manufactured & optimised for fast writing speeds (up to 32x speed) & this is causing the problem (you can't write at x1 or x2 speed to these new speedy discs).

Trying a few different brands of discs to try out is a whole lot cheaper than a repair. I suggest when you find a brand that works, you stock up on these discs as it seems they will become ever rarer.

Good luck!

RECORD DROP OUT

Just bought this CDR 570 and not use yet.

Reading the instruction manual - yes, life experience has taught me some really useful stuff! -

Under 'Discs for recording' on page 7 it says at end of section

IMPORTANT:
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of PHILIPS audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only'
Roughly translated I read this to me - 'don't blame us if the set don't work using other (non-compatible) discs' !!
