Question about Magellan RoadMate 700 GPS Receiver

RoadMate 700/760 Version 6 update maps are over a year old!!

This is a warning to everyone with a RM 700/760. The V6 update that just came out in Nov/Dec 07 has old maps from 2006 Q3. My home address is not on this map (though my street is 3 years old). What's worse is that the newer Magellans that are in the stores (and that were in the stores before this map update came out) have my home address on their maps. Magellan is deceiving consumer by saying we are getting updated maps, but to sell us maps that are over a year old. They probably got these old maps at a bargain license fee from NavTeq and thought no one would call them on it. As many people as possible should complain about this to force Magellan to remedy this situation. I'll never buy Magellan again.

I called Magellan support, and although reports on the web say you can never get anyone, I did get someone. I was told that if I was unhappy with the update I should talk to the trade-in department which would have a great offer for me. I asked what if I was unhappy with the offer, the rep assured me that I would be happy. The trade-in department's offer was this "40% discount off of the units sold on the website". Sounds like a great discount until you do the math. The Maestro 4040 for example is $450 on the web site or $270 after their discount. That unit currently sells for $290 on So for a $20 discount I have to give up my old unit for which I just spent an extra $70 to upgrade??

I got escalated up to Kevin Peterson, the floor supervisor. He told me that he was as high as I could go and wouldn't give me anyone else's name. The buck stopped with him. He said the 40% discount was the only remedy that I had. I tried several things like "okay, give me the $180 that you claim you are giving to me through the discount and let me buy the unit on Amazon". No die. I asked for my money back for the map update. No die. The worst part is this. I asked why Magellan was issuing new map updates that had 16 month old maps, when Magellan clearly had new maps at their disposal, given the fact that I found my address on the Maestro 4250 in the store. He said I couldn't expect my old unit to have maps as new as the latest model out there. I said "but that model came out in August 2007 and your map updates came out in December 2007. That makes no sense. Tell me how that makes sense." His only response was "I understand your frustration but there is nothing more than the 40% discount that I can offer you." That is the wall that I have currently run into.

I just called back and was told by customer service that I could not talk to Ashley, the customer service manager. I told my problem to the rep and asked him just to explain why map updates that came out in December 2007 were older than what was on their latest machine. He told me the latest machine had 2007 Q1 maps on it, but that the unit wasn't available from Magellan's web site until January. I said, well Amazon.comhas a release date of August 2007 and has reviews from the beginning of November 2007, so it makes no difference when Magellan's web site is going to start selling it, it's been available since at least the first of November. He told me that I could buy the next map upgrade to see my neighborhood and that he couldn't tell me anything more. He then quickly said "thank you for calling Magellan" and hung up.

The only explaination is that Magellan is purposefully selling outdated maps to steer people into buying newer devices. That, or they got a great discount from NavTeq, the map company, for outdated maps. Either way, this is shady, and anti-consumer behaviour.

I hope that the market wakes up to Magellan's ways and that the company goes out of business. They must make enough money from commercial contracts to not care about their consumer business.

By the way, I live in a suburb of Atlanta and my neigborhood that is not on the map is very large (well over one hundred homes).

I wish I had found this site two weeks ago! I had a RoadMate760 and tried to update the maps by buying the cd but when I tried to download it into my 760 the cd fried my unit. The rep said I had one choice, upgrade to a newer unit. I did and now they can't find it even though FedEx said they tried to deliver and had to return it to Magellan. I talked to reps in India and the Philippines.

I bought the V6 upgrade on June 5th 2008 for my RM 700.

The new version could not find my son'd address in Florida.

June 12th I call the 1866 support number(India) and was told in October 2008 the new version would come out with all new addresses. I should call back for a refund and get the new one.(Bogus information)

6-19-08 I called that 1866 support number again to make sure of the above info. This time all I could make out was a new number to call. I called 1800 707.....(Plillipines) Spoke to a young girl there who after checking google maps and verifying the that the Florida address existed explained that it was NAVTEQ's fault not Magellan's. She transfered me to a Tampa supervisor. The only name he would give was Miguel. He blamed NAVTEQ as being the culprit. No recourse,no refund just bull manure. I told this last guy that I would be contacting the BBB in Florida.

This will probably put me back in square one.

Anyone tht has ever read about Magellan should have figured out how stupid the engineers are as the 360 unit has a button called repair and the ONLY funtion this button has is to wipe out the OS from the unit with no way to reinstall it with Magellan's help. I know how to fix it but if you call Magellan they tell you it is impossible to fix. Why a company would put a button on the unit that the user should NEVER use is an insight to the IQ of the engneers they have.

THE CURE for this problem is NEVER BUY Magellan again!!

After paying over £800 for an early Roadmate 700 (which failed and was replaced by a failed/recon version) then to have problems with software.. now having waited a year to get map update and version 6 firmware I find it doesn't give me Magellan Tools which was promised by Magellan Support.

After several mail queries and important qustions remaining unanswered I am buying a Tomtom Go 720T which will do all the updates automatically via a cradle linked to my PV/Internet.

NEVER EVER AGAIN a damned Magellan - great when it works but it's easier to get blood from a stone than good support from Magellan.

I was certainly annoyed when I noticed the date on the map. The question I had to ask myself was: how old was the map it was replacing? In my particular area of interest, there were a lot of streets in our city of about 200,000 people that were not on the map that was installed when I bought the GPS. Now, with the Q3-2006 map, many of those streets now show up.

Whether Magellan is buying old maps and trying to fool its customers, or whether it simply takes them that long to convert Navteq raw data into a format that can be used by their Spell & Speak technology is not for me to comment definitively on. I do wish the maps were newer, but they definitely are an improvement over what I had been using.

I'm curious to know how big the city is where jaquil lives? Is it possible that it was small enough (or even TOO big) so as not to have been properly resurveyed for the new map? If your street is 3 years old, I can't see it being left off the Q3-2006 survey except if the whole area was skipped by the Navteq survey.

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

Here's a link to this great service

Good luck!

Roadmate 5045 slow after update

Magellan support was actually pretty good helping me with the exact same issue. The problem (at least in my case) was that the map files were fragmented. I tried using the Windows defragmenter, but that made fragmentation even worse! The Magellan support engineer recommended I download UltraDefrag instead:

Here's what I had to do to completely resolve my issue:
1. Download and install UltraDefrag
2. Connect my GPS to my PC
3. Move the MAP directory from my GPS drive (J:) to my hard disk
4. In UltraDefrag, make sure Action > Skip removable media is not selected
5. Run the optimizer (Ctrl-F7 or Action > Full optimization) after selecting the GPS drive (J: on my computer)
6. Copy the MAP files back to the J: drive AFTER optimization has completed

I double-checked the fragmentation after the files were copied and got 0%. After disconnecting the GPS from the PC, the unit rebooted and doing an address search no longer takes 15 seconds. POI searchs are also much faster than before.

How do you get up to date maps for navman my55T

Start at the navman website.

I should pre-warn you that they are not very friendly. About 4 years ago I bought my mom a Navman ICN 620, after 6 months I tried to get updates and called and emailed them for about four months finally when they responded they just said they were not updating US maps for any of their previous products. Looks like they are more an international company that sells in limited quantity in the US through Radio Shack stores. I have gone back to their website about 5 times since then to see if any updates were ever added and they never did.

If its an older unit I would replace it Tomtom makes a nice unit and Magellan even has a few units with free traffic updates (depending on area)

I finally just replaced the unit for her this christmas bought her a Magellan roadmate 1470 for $150.

Just FYI most GPS manufacturers want you to pay YEARLY for their map updates and if you skip an update you may have to also pay to do a firmware update. I have a Tomtom go 720 which is 2 years old they wanted $49 for a firmware update and $99 for the map update.

My 700 gets stuck with the last map

Same problems, you have to update as far as I know and you have to update every year otherwise it will start to freeze up. It's a rip off because it's $99 a year. Does anyone know if the other GPS companies do this?
