Question about AT&T 1717 Digital Answering Machine

1 Answer

Got new phone, answering machine dead?

I hooked up a new phone and now my At&t 1717 answering machine shows two horizontal lines in the display window and is unresponsive to any button pressing, including all procedures in the manual. The phone can still be used when the machine is hooked up, but the machine itself does nothing. I even tried to hook the machine back up to another phone, the same model I replaced before and had the same problem. New phone is V-Tech T-2326 old one was a Uniden EXP 970

There is no two horizontal lines error description in user manual.

Based on my experience, I think, maybe it is related to parrellel phone dectection. ATT 1717 already think, the system is busy or in use. The line voltage is too low when you hook up other phone.
Your house phone line maybe far from switch (3km to 5km).

Jessd76, I know this is late and maybe posterity will see this, but I recall my att 1717 doing this when I switched wall adapters by mistake. It's easy to do if they adapters look alike. Maybe your new phone had a similar adapter. I fed it a DC adapter and the machine would show two bars but would not respond. There is no power requirement printed on the machine, but it takes a 9v AC, 400ma adapter. Stupid me, I threw the thing out before realizing my mistake.

lobomir73, I believe you are correct. I also got the 2 horizontal lines with 9 v dc as the input. The device works correctly with 9 v ac. Posterity thanks you for the tip :-)

I have an AT&& 1717 answering machine. I would to transfer a message from the machine to my PC. Is there a way to do that?

The only way I can see doing this is to use a recording program on your computer. Plug in a microphone to your audio input and make that the active audio input. For Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound. Then select Manage Audio Devices. Set your microphone up near the speaker of the answering machine.

Launch the recording software and start a recording session (set the sampling rate), then press Play on the answering machine. Record all the messages until past the one you want to keep. Then use the editing features in the software to delete the early segments.

Audacity is one of the recording software programs that I use but most of my recording is from a cassette tape. I'm using line in and not the microphone.

I hope this helps.

I have a new at&t phone and having problem setting it up

I have a couple of questions. Are you having problem with the 1717 answering machine or a telephone? Do you need a manual for the answering machine? Could you give more detail on where you are having a problem and what kind and maybe we can help.

How do i record my personal greeting on answer machine model ATT 1717. I am only able to get the prerecorded greeting. Thank you charlene

I hope this helps you:

Recording Your Announcement

Before using this answering system, you

should record the announcement (up to

one minute long) that callers will hear

when the system answers a call. If you

choose not to record an announcement,

the system answers with a prerecorded

announcement: "Hello. Please leave a

message after the tone."

1 Press and hold annc/skip. The system

beeps. Speak toward the microphone

normally, from about nine inches away.

While you are recording, the Message

Window displays -.

2 To stop recording, release .annc/skip

The system automatically plays back

your announcement.

To review your announcement, press
and release .annc/skip

You can get a copy of your 1717 manual at this web site:

Hope this helps. Good Luck, Barb

Disabled phone line

Sounds like the answering machine is picking up the telephone line and not releasing it.

Hence the busy signal, cause the answering machine has the line off hook. It's like leaving your telephone off hook, the next caller will get a busy signal...

The answering machine might be bad... have you noticed that you were talking on the phone and hung up then the next call would be the busy signal? Maybe test this out.
Do you have the correct voltage to the answering machine, too much power or too little power can do funny things to telephone equipement.

How to set number of rings

Use Ring Select to choose how many times
the line will ring before the system
answers a call. Set for 2, 4 or Toll Saver.
When you set the system for Toll Saver, it
answers after four rings when you have no
new messages, and after two rings when
you have new messages.
1. Press and hold "set up" for about two
seconds. The system announces the
current ring selection.
2 Press and release "ANNC/SKIP" or "MEMO/REPEAT"
until the system announces your ring
selection.
3 Press and release "Play/Stop" to exit
