try installing proper drivers for the AUDIO CARD! the orange led only indicates the HTK HOTKEYdrivers are working properly, it does NOT says a thing about audio card drivers! so i suggest you to install proper drivers for audio playback!
I got mine to work by changing the port from USB001 to USB002 prints great now, there is problems with installing on windows 8, you have to disable driver verification or the driver won't install.
When downloading a printer driver from HP you will need to ensure that you are selecting the correct OS (eg. Windows 7) and the appropriate version (eg. 64 or 32 bit operating system). These drivers are different and using one on the other will not work.
Windows XP drivers also will not work properly in a Windows 7 environment and the majority of Windows XP drivers are 32-Bit.
Please re-install *********** board drivers properly including the sound drivers. For even though we have an outlet for mike nor speaker it is still not activated if we still have not installed its drivers. If this won't work. Try To repair you OS ( Windows ) by means of the installation cd. Have a nice day my friend. I'm hoping this would help you a little.

You must first disconnect the device. Then uninstall the drivers. Reboot the computer. Reinstall the drivers. Reconnect the device and allow Windows sufficient time to auto detect and load up the drivers. Then only will the scanner work properly.
Sometime when computer boots sound driver is unable to load properly and as a result you won't be getting any sound for that session only. If the problem still prevails uninstall sound driver using the device manager and try installing it after a fresh boot. GOOD LUCK
