Re: LCDMonitors Manuals

Not too many manufacturers are providing schematic for their product. But you probably can try if they have. you have to sign up to download. You did not mention the model of your manitor. However, if your monitor is old enough, it probably needs CCFL replacement. The ends of the tube usually get blacken when out just like the ordinary flourescent lamp. If still new, then it could be the CCFL driver (pwr supply).

My screen goes blank when monitor is turned on.power light on monitor stays on. What is the problem?

If you look at the screen at a sharp angle and you see a faint Windows image then the problem is a back light fault. This fault can be caused by a faulty inverter board that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp OR the CCFL lamp is faulty. The CCFL lamp is a very small diameter fluro lamp/tube and just before they fail completely they product a pinkish light.
Replacement inverter and CCFL lamp are available from this WEB site.

Samsung Syncmaster 2220wm. All of sudden, the monitor went black. It does not show any light at all on the screen. The power light is on (light comes on green). I connected a different monitor, it worked...

Power capacitors on the power board most likely gone. You could get a qualified technician to investigate and repair by replacing the blown capacitiors ( you may notice a charring smell from the back of the monitor if they have gone). Cost of replacement is however likely to be more than the monitor replacement is worth. unlike CRT monitors, these are not designed to be easily repaired

Hi...Hannspree hu196 ,screen is blank but front light is on and goes green that it detects computer. Chris

this looks like the backlight has gone in your monitor, to test this connect this monitor to your pc and wait for green light. get a torch and shine it into the screen (really close up) you might see the log in screen.

To fix would probably cost more than the actual monitor is worth, would suggest going online and getting a cheap replacement, loads of them are listed on online auction sites.

I have a Dell monitor model #1901FP when my computer comes on the monitor comes on as it should. After only a few seconds the monitor goes blank. You can turn the monitor off then back on the monitor...

The solution I am about to describe refers to a backlight problem, which is most common in Dell 15,17 & 19" monitors. The symptoms are as you describe:
  • You power on the monitor, the green on/off switch illuminates and the display works for approx 1-2 seconds and then goes blank.
  • The green on/off switch stays illuminated but the screen remains blank
  • If you shine a torch into the LCD matrix you can see the display being rendered faintly
  • Switching the monitor off and then on again illuminates the display again for 1-2 seconds before going blank again
This is a backlight fault and is most likely to be caused by the failure of two of the four driver transistors used to light the lighting tubes in the LCD Matrix. This fault is easy to repair if you (or a friend) have a soldering iron and a voltmeter.

Inside the monitor there is an inverter board that acts as a power supply for the monitor and the logic necessary to control the backlights (illumination and brightness control). There are four lighting tubes, which are controlled by two lighting circuits (two lighting tubes per circuit). At the heart of the inverter board is a chip that monitors feedback from the two lighting circuits and closes the back-light circuit down if either of the lighting circuits fail, thus any component failure will exhibit the same symptoms.

The transistors which fail most often cost pence to replace (types C5706 or C5707). However, their failure in unlikely to be the cause of the problem. My first crack at fixing this fault, by replacing the transistors, resulted in them failing again within 24/48Hrs. The cause of the problem will be dry solder joints or loose connections on the high-voltage side of the circuit, usually on the backlight transformer in the effected circuit. If you re solder each of the connectors on the transformer you will save the transistors from blowing again - the transformer generates 1,400Volts for the lighting tubes and at this voltage, arcing across the a dry solder joint, will quickly destroy the transistors again.

No soldering iron? - A complete inverter board replacement is also reasonably cheap and easy repair. These are widely available.

Sorry of this is more detail than you expected but it may help others reading this article.

Screen is black

The problem is a back-lighting fault. This fault can be a faulty inverter board os a faulty CCFL lamp.

After 5 minutes monitor screen dims--can faintly see the windows screen and then it flickers out and there is nothing. Any ideas?

the monitor may be going into power save mode which it should come out of when you press a key or move the mouse but it sounds like you have tube inverter issues. Your screen has light tubes behind it to illuminate the screen, if the tubes or the inverter develop a fault, then a very dark screen can result as the tubes are turned off. There may also be an ambient light sensor which will darken the screen in low ambient light. If the sensor is faulty, darkened screens will result. If the inverter is failing, you may be able to replace it, contact viewsonic. if the tubes are failing, replace the panel or the entire monitor. If the ambient light sensor is faulty, replace the panel or entire monitor as the sensor is part of the display panel.

Black screen no picture

Your inverter has died and is a very common fault with all LCD monitors. The inverter powers the lights that sit behind the screen so you can see what is happening. So no lights, no picture.
Shining a bright torch at an angle from the top you will be able to see the image on screen, but very feintly.
This is something your local TV repair shop will be able to take care of fairly cheaply. It's not a good idea to play around in these types of monitors unless you have some understanding of what lay ahead.

Let me know if I can help further.

Monitor doesnt work

Replace 3A PF### fuse on main board. (reason for the # is because I have put the monitor together and cant remember the component number) I could see with a torch the initial display on power up. The PCB has white writing on it to display what component should be on the board. All PFs on the board have wire links on them but one. It looks Iike a black cylinder, 7mm long, and 3mm diammeter. The green writing on it was "bel MS 3A". I would have found this fuse earlier, but the writing was facing down on the board. This fuse powers the circuit to the back lights. Please check continuity of fuse before replacing back lights, as a 10 cent fuse is cheeper than backlights.
Fuses WILL blow for no reason. I have replaced it with a 5A for testing, and everything checked out OK. Also the monitor powered up and has been running fine.
