Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera

7 Answers

CF error I own a Canon 400D. It worked perfectly until today. I inserted the cf card, and turned on the camera. It took a couple of seconds to light up, and I got a message that the cf card was faulty and needs to be replaced. I used another one...it said the same thing. I tried reformatting. It gave me an err99 and then said that "shooting is not possible" I formatted the card on the computer...no luck. The pins are in place, I checked. What could be the problem and how could I go about solving this? Thank you.

I'm having the same problem. My first card, a Lexar 1GB worked fine. The second was with a Samsung 8GB card, which produced the 99 error code, even after formatting on my PC. I returned it and got a Samsung 4GB card that was listed as Canon compatible. It produced the error at first but when I formatted it using my PC it worked. Later I bought a 2 GB Kingston and now the error comes up on all three of my cards.

Hi this is me again, Happy Feet. I encountered this problem shortly after first use. I had removed the card and then reinserted it. It appears, that somehow the pins bent. (I was very careful). I called Canon and since the camera was less than one year old they told me it was under warranty. I had to send it to them for repair. Cost to me... shipment and insurance only. I am afraid to use it however as I fear it will happen again. I don't think I will ever remove the card once I install it. I think this is a flaw with the camera. I love Canon cameras but I regret buying this because it uses the Compact Flash card. Wish it used the SD type card. Oh well. If under warranty, call Canon for repair. Good luck.

I was shooting and suddenly got the CF error telling me that there's a problem with the CF card. I tried to use my PC to download the photos and there was no image available. What should I try next?

My canon xti had the same reading cf card error 99.
Since my camera is out of warranty. I had to find a way to fix it. After reading all possible solutions in this site, I looked at the pins (that used to connect to the CF card) and found out that one pin in the middle bent. That caused the problem. I used the tiny screw driver to bend that pin back to the original position. Inserted the card back and it worked. I felt so happy!!!! (Please make sure to have the battery removed while fixing...to be saved.)

Canon have a few different ERROR codes (eg ERR01, ERR02 etc) BUT if there is any other fault with the camera that is not covered by them it comes up with ERR99 (vaguely saying ANY other fault!)

Some of the problems above may be the CF card holder pins being damaged - Have a look in the holder if you can, there are longer pins at each end & the middle, they are the ones that show any damage first. Needs to go to a repairer for that one !

Some of the problems above could be down to the cards being formatted on the PC. Always best to use the camera to re-format the cards. Sometimes the PC can re-format the card with the wrong configuration causing the ERR99.

Hope this helps someone

Usually 99 error means a problem with the lens, try to change the lens, or connect it all the way (i.e. until you can turn it anymore). I had a Sigma lens that didn't work with my new digital Canon. it also gave me 99 error and then 2 months ago, a canon lens gave me the same problem, check the lens.

Error 99

This is a broad error for hot shoe issues and the lens electrical contacts. People have complained about this and it was never related to the memory card. The most common cause for this error is the lens contacts though. On the body, being very careful - check the contacts for oil or dirt. You can take a clean pencil eraser and gently wipe the contacts (making sure not to let shavings or anything get into the body!). Do the same for the lens and try it out. Many people have reported success after this process. Good luck.

I sent it in for a repair to canon, came back good as new with no charge.

I recharged the battery to full capacity. Still, the camera still reports a code 99 error on all CF cards. I'll bring the camera in to work with me tomorrow and call Canon for warranty service. Unfortunately, this means I'll miss photographing the lunar eclipse tomorrow night. Oh, well!

Cf card error

The file system on your CT memory card can be corrupted. It only takes one second, when you not watch the access light on the back of the camera, when you pull out the memory card. If the card does not contain any pictures, just try to format it. If it won't work in the camera, try to format it in an external card reader connected to a computer with an older operating system then Vista. Give it a format FAT 12 or 16 for the smaller CF cards (less than 2 GB) and FAT32 for the bigger ones.
If this works, don't forget to let the camera do a format to, just to make sure the card can be used by your camera.

My canon eos rebel xti keeps showing error code 99

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the
following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should
be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of
steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.

If the "ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the "ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

CF card error message

Take a look inside your camera's CF card slot. I suspect that you may have a bent pin in there. If so, you can take it to be professionally repaired by replacing the card reader. But you may also want to consider repairing it yourself by unbending the pin.

To do so, remove batteries and card. Use a small/skinny jeweler's flat screwdriver to bend the pin back as close as possible. The jeweler's screwdrivers that you see at the dollar store will work fine. Another tool that I sometimes use is a stiff wire with a bent hook on the end to get very flattened pins started.

Take your time and use as much patience as you can muster (take a breather in between if needed).
It doesn't have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it. When it's the best that you can get it, take your flash card and "SLOWLY" insert it. The card itself should fine-align the pin. Remove the card, and verify that the pin is still straightened. If so, reinsert the card and try it out.

Canon A85 power on problem

I think we can rule out a problem with the cards, which leaves the camera. maybe one of the cf pins is bent?? look into the slot with a light and check for any pins out of line, if you find any, see if you gently push it back into place. I saw the exact same problem, having the same fix. try also connecting AC through a cable and the camera to the computer, see if it makes any change. Whats your warranty status? use it if you still got it, if not, get a repair estimate. Hope it works out
