Samsung HLN617W TV made loup popping sound. Pulled the lamp and it's fine. However, behind the glass window that faces the lamp are several broken fragments of glass. Is this a broken color wheel?

Color appears to be a variety of colors including a dark bluish tint. It's located behind the window inside the TV and only viewable once the lamp has been pulled out. The lamp is in great shape. I've replaced 2 lamps myself in three years and know what one looks like when it's fried. The color wheel was replaced once before due to the infamous grinding noise, but never heard of on shattering either. It's literally in dozens of small pieces all piled behind the window. The TV shut down with the three blinking lights and would not fire up. If the color wheel directly faces the lamp, I'm almost sure that it's what shattered.

When I power up the TV the lamp light flashes and I get a 3-4 second beep or alarm code. This happens 3 times and then the TV powers off and all three leds flash. Could this be caused a defective color wheel? I have a replacement lamp and it has the same result. Also, if it is the color wheel, where can I get one and is it difficult to replace?

My Color Wheel did shatter, I was able to replaced it myself and it fired up again. If you replace it yourself, take your time and document each step and label everything. It takes about 1 - 2 hours from start to finish

If it is it will be the first I've heard of one shattering... The CW spins at 7200 rpms and at that speed anything is possible. What color is the glass?? Clear and it's not the CW.. My bet is on the lamp. Does the lamp fire up?? You need to do a bit of investigating and let me know and I'll try and help..
Good Luck!

Samsung dlp made a popping sound now only have sound and tv turns itself on and off. All 3 lights on front were flashing. I took out looks fine....thought I would put it back in when I noticed...

You have a good eye, that would be the color wheel. You can call samsung at 1-800-samsung to find a repair center, it is not an easy job to replace it yourself.

My 46" Samsung TV -

The first thing to do is with the set unplugged remove the lamp the set uses (customer replaceable) and examine it to see if shattered inside.

Lamp door is either on side or rear of set, once door is removed you will find the lamp cartridge which is secured by two brass screws; with them backed out grasp the handle on the cartridge and pull lamp and cartridge out.

Do not touch the face of the lamp but look inside the glass--if it looks like a 1950s style flashbulb with bits of broken glass, you have found your problem.

before you rate this information let me know what you find and what questions you have; make a comment here and the site will email me.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

When I turn off my Samsung DLP it makes a pop and a sound like ''Glass breaking'' about 1 to 2 seconds after the picture and sound has stopped.

Hi,it sounds like its the lamp, when it goes out lamp will pop and you'll hear glass inside of it.Make sure you get the original Philips lamp. Also check the color wheel here;s how to take it out: It might be that color wheel is broken and that's why you hear glass breaking because it might still spin broken.God bless you!

No picture but sound once it goes off there is 3 blinking lights

Most likely for this symptom is the lamp. If you'd like you could sit behind the set and have someone turn it on, you should hear the color wheel spin up and then you should hear the ballast try to fire the lamp, it makes a small arcing sound. If the lamp doesn't light the process starts over again.

Read replace lamp then afew weeks later heard pop noise and now black screen

Two things in your TV can make that popping sound. One is the bulb of course and the other is a capacitor. Have you pulled out the bulb to inspect it? My guess is that you have broken glass in the cooling fan, which is why there is a grinding sound. Most bulbs tend to contain the glass from getting everywhere as it's only the filament inside that pops creating little diamond looking pieces inside the lens. If a surge was strong enough or if the bulb was poorly manufactured, the whole unit can explode inside spraying glass everywhere.

If the bulb looks fine, the pop must've been a capacitor on one of your circuit boards resulting in no display. Since the TV still powers on, your power supply and it's fuse appear to be fine. Check the bulb first and go from there.
