This is symptom of faulty inverter circuit causing screen is black .Replaced the inverter so it works normal again.

i have had to replace the hdmi input board on these units to fix them.

This is a backlight problem, possibly the cold flourescent lamp at the top of the LCD display panel or (less likely) a bad inverter board. To prevent further damage to the TV, I suggest you not turn it on until it's fixed. You may be able to find CCFL replacement tubes on line, but I can't say the job will be easy and you won't notice possible backlight inconsistancies. If the CCFL wires are long enough to swap, you could move them to each others connector and see if the problem moves to the bottom of the screen. If it moves the lamp is bad. If the problem stays on the top it's the most likely the inverter.

Shine a bright light on the screen, do you see the image (but very very very dark)? If so, its either a bad inverter or lamps, which are only sold with the LCD panel as an assembly, which is very expensive (more than the TV is worth).

My best suggestion is to replace the inverter to the lcd panel.I could look up the part number if you need.Let me know - edcarson

It sounds like it's the inverter panel which lites the lcd back light.
If it's under warranty, try to replace it, or take it in for svc.
