I went to use my camcorder today and when I open the monitor it did not come on. I closed it and tried again. The camcorder functioned normally except for this one feature. I just used the camcorder a couple of days before with no problem. It has been safely in it's bag since then, please advise. Sean

The micro switch at the joint is bad or the ribbon cable is loose. It has two functions - flip the video upside down so that you can do self recording to monitor and turn on the monitor when the panel is swung open. The switch is stuck in a middle state when you put it to normal. It needs to be taken apart and reseated correctly.
Since you opened up the PC the first thing to do would be to make sure the graphics card (if it is a standalone card) is seated properly. Remove it, blow out any dust, and re-install it. If that does not fix the problem, or if the graphics are built into the PC, try getting a cheap video card (or borrow one from a friend) and that should fix the problem, since you have ruled out the monitor as the problem.
Also, it could be a problem with the power supply. I'd chase down the graphics card side first though. If that doesn't work, try the same procedure with the power supply.
Note: I have run into instances where an AGP slot got "zapped" by someone opening the case and not taking proper static precautions, so be careful, always unplug the PC and ground yourself to the case before touching anything. If you try a video card you know is functioning and it still doesn't work, pick up a PCI graphics card and see if that works.
The problem is with the S-reel. Take the tape out, remove the battery, and give it a slight bump. This usually fixes the issue for a couple of weeks. I haven't heard of any permenant fixes. I took my cam into circuit city (before they closed) twice for the same issue. Very frustrating when you don't know what the issue is.
I just experienced the same problem, but it took me 10 minutes to get it working again. When you look inside the tape rack, you see on the left side in the middle a little mechanical arm which you can press down for about 1cm when you release it again the rack opens completely
Good luck Robert
Your unit is a 2004 model. If it has never been used since then the battery is probably no good and will need replaced. Batteries discharge 20% on a monthly basis just sitting on the shelf so yours went dead a long time ago. Then if they are left in that state (dead) they sulfate which means that sulfur oxides transfer to the plates and form an insulating surface. At that point all the charging in the world is not going to bring it back. All you can do is get another one. They are available at most stores which sell electronics. Get a new battery and charge it per the instructions and try using it again. This should solve your problem. Good luck.
