Question about Dell Latitude C640 Notebook

Power & Battery in a Dell Latitude C640

As I read here before, I have the same problem, seems to me that the battery was too long without use or charge, so now is charging 100% and a life of 1 hour and 51 min (thats what WinXp says), but seems to me that eventhough charges the battery but the notebook not works with just the power cord or brick, is some where a setting that have to be changed or do I have a problem with the board? Any light will be apreciated!!

Good!!! I went to the place where I bought it and they gave me another brick, we do not care about the battery, so now we are using it without problems.

If the laptop does not run plugged into AC power, then you may have a defective power brick or a power problem with the laptop.

I would try another power brick. If that doesnt do it then your power jack inside the machine may be damaged and usually that means the motherboard is cracked. The only fix in that case is a new motherboard ($150-$200 plus labor) OR you can get the Dell C PORT II port replicator which has its own power jack.

Hope this helps!

If the rechargable battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

Samsung n148 not getting charged to 100%

Go into Start, Programs then Samsung folder. The first item in the list is Battery Life Extender. There are two modes, one that charges the battery to 100% and another that is to extend the battery life by only charging to 80% (said to be better if laptop is plugged in most of the time). I put it back on the 100% setting and problem permanently solved. I would imagine if you're having this exact problem that other manufacturers probably have the same kind of settings.

The battery must have gone bad! if its three or more years old you need to get a new battery for the computer. Periodic conditioning of the battery from first use may prolong the battery life. Battery life is reduced by plugging computer with battery all the time.
Conditioning. Periodic full charge and full discharge practice is good for battery. Batteries are better charged when they are at less than 10% power and its better to charge them to 100%. Do not leave on electric power once they are fully charged.
I hope this helps in future but current battery may need replacement!

Not really, the older NiCad batteries get a memory effect if you keep charging from a half charged state, but modern Lithium batteries do not suffer from this problem.

My sensr480 note book battery 100% not charging only 80% charging please give me solution it.

Samsung laptops have this program called Battery Life Extender where this would allow you to choose your charging to 100% or 80%. 80% charging as the program says will lessen the ageing of your battery thus extending the overall battery life specially when your using youre laptop connected to AC more often.
I would guess that you might have activated that program if youre only charging at 80%. Have a look at it at youre programs and reply back.

One of the things is usage does drop the scale each time you use the battery without having the power supply unit plugged in. This is common for it to drop. The thing to worry about is if it does not charge back up to 100% at all. The ideal way to not ruin a battery is to let it go completely down to about 10% then charge it to 100% and go that route always charging will over time decrease battery life. So there is nothing that you are doing wrong or the battery going bad not at all this is normal. It will discharge normally without any usage especially over a two week period of time not being charged and just sitting there. John

I'm not sure of your charging regiem but it is possible that you hav not let the batteries become disscharged before they back on the charger, short cycling particular batteries gives them a memory and reduces their life significantly. Most rechargeable batteries have a life of so many cycles, just say its 100 cycles. If you put on charge when battery is only down to 80% and charge it up this counts as 1 cycle. Therefore your battery life would be reduced to 20% of what its capable of. This is only true if short cycling the chargeing of the battery is frequent. Not knowing exactly what your charging habits are or the age of them makes it a guess from me. It otherwise might be a fault in your charging circuit which would require specialist diagnosis.
