I went to install a new printer yesterday and nothing happened. It won't play, burn, or even open. It is a Hewlett Packard with Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 3.I am grateful for any advice. Thanks for your time.

try imgburn, free, it works like gang busters.
what cant it be?, well lots !
1: bad dvd drive.
2: bad disks, DVD-r works best. or CD-R
3: bad burn program.
4: infected OS, gee if XP its sure is, all are now. its a virus magnet.
5: bad dvd drivers. (if XP?, need sP3 first and then needs the HP drivers, then needs the registry filters cleaned. (all pain here, take great skills to make XP work, and lots of text in a box, endless.
(to solve any problem like this,
replace it is most easy first or most cheaper.
your call that.
Do you have your printer properly installed in the system?
Go to control panel, printers, and see what printers you have installed. Among them there will be a "virtual" printer called "Microsoft XPS writer" - it is a special "printer" that saves your document in a special type of file. Not very useful in your case.
Do you see any other printers apart from the above mentioned? If so, then most probably the "XPS writer" is set as default printer, and you have to select the actual printer you have (I presume it will be HP Deskjet D4260, as in the topic), right-click it and choose "set as default". Then you should be able to print OK from whichever application you want to print. Additonally, when you select File->Print from that application's menu, it will show you a window, where the chosen printer is specified; you can always open the drop-down list of printers there and select a different one (your actual printer).
If there are no other printers on the list apart from the XPS writer, it means that your printer is not installed in the system, and you have to install the driver from a CD that came with the printer. Or if you don't have the CD, go to the HP website, download and install the driver for your printer.
Good luck, and please come back with a testimonial if helped.
installed POWERDVD program into your system unit and put the homemade video again and click on the powerdvd icon and click play button on it and it would start playing.
from the model number that you gave it shows that you have a burner. try going to were the music folder is at and right clicking with your mouse on the music and hit the send to option then select your cd rom as a destination then it will burn it this way as well. also make sure you have cd-rw disc dvd-r disc will not work for this
Open your sound controls to make sure nothing is muted or set on low volume. If that's not the case, open your audio drivers program and check to see if nothing is muted.
Are you sure your player has got the right codecs to play both audio and video of the DVD you have burnt?
PS: Try installing the Ace Mega Codecs Pack just to make sure you have all the codecs. (Remember though that this software will install all the required codecs as well as the unneeded ones...the ones maybe required in the future probably)
