Your lens is damaged or defective and needs to be replaced.
We no longer offer this repair because the lens and the mainboard of the camera must 'match' so that they work properly together and it's difficult to have a huge stock of different series lenses to be able to find one that will match your mainboard.
You can try finding someone to install a new lens for you and hopefully they will have a lens that will work properly, and you can also look for a lens online to install yourself.
Canon will want $150 or so for the repair if you send it to them.
Sorry I don't have better news than that for you, but hope this helps.

I know the Display is working because the camera setting show up, but point the camera at a person to take picture and the display is blank/black... person does not show up on display. I took the picture any way and when I review the pictures, they are black...no person. I tried to reset default settings. That did not work. Any ideas?

I have a problem with Canon SD850 in zoom mode and low light. Outside in less than sunny weather, if I zoom on a subject the LCD gets really dark (almost black) when I compose a picture. Picture will come out just like LCD.
