Most likely your invertor, which controls the power distributed to your lcd. probably bad have a tech swap one out for you, its located right under your lcd.

Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. In some models of LCD TVS; the backlight inverter and its T'Con board will be a part of the panel itself, and will be a built-in type inside the LCD panel. If so, they can't be replaced. In this case; a panel replacement is the only repair. For some other models, the backlight inverter section circuit will be a part of the main power supply regulator [SMPS]. To such sets, the power supply section circuit too should trouble shoot. Contact any service technician. The circuit will differ with models and versions.
Screen is black? Does it look like the computer booted up all the way, if so maybe your icons are on the desktop.
Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.
Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

You might try shining a red light into the screen when the room is dark, if you can see the screen then, you light bulb in your screen is out, and I would suggest getting a new laptop since it would nearly cost as much to get the screen fixed.
the gateway hang indicates to things either a bios problem or a failing hard drive,sometimes when hard drives start getting old they take a while to spin up and/or has difficulty finding the boot sector,you also have corrupt files which would indicate a failing hard drive.
Try just restarting your computer the hard drive will already be warmed and spun up so the Gateway screen may pass faster.
Try running this prog to diagnose a failing hard drive,it will run in the background so just uninstall it your drives fine.
Hi, No the screen is fine the back light is not working you have replace the back light of the screen to resolve the issue.But before that please try the FN+F6 or F7 keys to control the brightness.
This is a hardware failure of the LCD back-light or a loose connection which requires partial disassembly to verify. Most likely it will require an LCD replacement. If you have an external monitor you can connect it to the video output so that you can see.
If the backlight lights up for a second it's probably fine - It lay odds on the display inverter in the screen. Actually finding parts for anything made by gateway may be difficult, however. They do not sell spare parts. Considering the size of the LCD i bet it would almost exceed the replacement cost of the screen to repair it
