Question about Garmin nuvi 350 GPS Receiver
I have a Garmin Nuvi 260 which is listed on the garmin website as having the function of speaking the street names. The website even describes the text to speech funtion.
But I can't get the unit to say the street names and can't figure out how to turn the function on. The manual is no help.
Question: How do I change the Voice Language setting on my nuvi 2xx?
--> Answer: All of the Garmin® automotive GPS units that speak street names are also loaded with basic voice prompts (example: Turn Right in 500 feet) as well as Text-to-Speech (TTS) voices that speak street names. If one of the basic types of voice prompts has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names. In order to change this setting on the nüvi® 2xx series, follow these steps:

Under Tools, Settings, Language, Voice, choose a language that has TTS (text to speech) written after it. That should do the trick.

The 260 has both TTS (?) and non tts voices. The TTS are the ones which speak the street names. You can also download other TTS voices via the Garmin WebUpdater program.

I thought I had the same problem when I just got my nuvi 350 but after playing around with it for a while I realized the problem is actually very easy to solve.
The "trick" is that you need to make sure your Locale setting (language) is set to one that is marked with the TTS function.
I have never used a 260 before but I suspect it's similar to 350. Here are the steps to follow to set up the "text to speech" function in nuvi 350:
From the main page (the one with "Where to", "View map"), go to "setting"(on the right hand side panel), then click on "Locale".
Click on the second icon (the red lips) and then choose a language that has "TTS" in brackets at the end. The names after each language simply refers to male/female voices.
American English-Jack(TTS) activates a male "text to speech" voice and American English-Jill(TTS) activates a female voice.
The default option for Locale is American English (w/o TTS) so if you choose default, your GPS will not read out street names.
Overall I quite like the Nuvi 350 for its simplicity and clarity. But I agree that the manual should have information like this. But it's become all straightforward after you playing with it for a while.
Hope you will enjoy your new GPS!

I got a 260 for my birthday...so I thought? Discovered the model 200 was placed in the box. After a long talk with the store manager...the error was corrected. I absolutely love my 260. : )

Same problem as well.
However; no languages were listed under the voice selection menu.
Restore was of no help.
Fix: Select text and just reselct your language of choice. This reinitialized the voice options and was able to select a voice with TTS capabilities.
