Question about Gateway Sb-4100-A PC Desktop
Installed 2 new 512mb memory cards in open slots; has 2 banks with 2 slots each, put new memory in 1 open slot in each bank, but computer still shows same RAM amount of 240 mb as before; is supposed to now be 1 gig
REmove all the old memory and replace it by a new memory, you should test memory 1 by 1 .
first install the 1 memory in the first slot. then boot the computer using only 512mb. if this successful. shutdown and insert the second memory, then test again.
note: memory should be:
1. DDR SDRAM
2. the two 512 should be the same brand.

Check the owners manual of your computer for the correct installation of 2 sticks of memory, this can be critical on computers with 2 banks of 2 slots, it will also tell you the maximum ram that will work. If you do not have the manual, go to the manufactures website and then go to the support link, and browse for memory installation. BPCS

tops: 8129 MB (8 GB.). 4- 2GB. Adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.
How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.
